Newborn clothes and summer

I had DS 3 weeks ago and up until now, he has been dressed in sleepsuits and vests with the odd cardigan thrown in when out and about. Today is absolutely boiling here and I'm going to need to take him out around half eleven to collect DD from nursery. What should I be dressing him in? Obviously I don't want him to get too hot or too cold but are sleepsuits and vests too much?

I have absolutely no experience of dressing a newborn throughout the summer months and I'm slightly worrying that he is going to be either too hot or cold. With DD, it was easy, because she was a winter baby and around the 6 month mark when the summer hit.

I think a general rule of thumb is to put your baby in whatever you would wear plus an extra layer. You can always put your ds in a vest and take a sleepsuit/throw a blanket over him if you think he's getting cold.

I like those little summer cotton romper suits like sleepsuits except short sleeves and feet.

My LO (who is now three) was born in a really hot July. I struggled with this. Had bl**dy family trying to wrap him up in cardies and hats, whilst DH would happily take him out in just a vest.

I would stick him in a sleepsuit with no vest or even just a vest and you can always stick a blanket or two on if he cries.

I think people used to say give them one more layer than you would want. Didn't really help me decide.

Number 2 is due next week so no doubt I will be far less rational next week.

Ha ha - we all posted at the same time and gave pretty much the same advice!

If my mother was on Mumsnet, she would have posted vest, sleepsuit, cardigan, hat and blanket.

in the summer here in Aus my dds spent most of their time in vests and nappies at home. Out and about - if really little - vest and short sleeved no legged baby gro.

my DS spent the first few weeks dressed in little more than a nappy and a vest

easy for a young baby to over heat

dress minimally and take a thin cellular blanket out with you

I saw a Mum with a newborn yesterday at dd's school - swaddled totally in a thick fleece blanket

I think an important thing is not to cover their heads too much as that's where they lose/retain the heat they need.

Thanks for the replies! I think I am going to take him out ina sleepsuit and vest and stash a cellular blanket underneath the buggy just in case because although it is hot, there is a slight breeze every now and again [extra emoticon]

dd born just before hot august bank hols, spent ages in just a short sleeved vest with poppers

did put a pair of socks on her tho, little feet felt SO cold despite the weather.

one of those long romper things without feet
but it is essential you keep him in the shade
tbh, i wouldnt take him out at all, and get someone else to pick up your dd

I took ds2 (7 weeks) out in a vest only. I covered him lightly with a muslin and kept him in his pushchair. I hung another muslin over the front of the hood to keep him shaded from the sun. I did the same with ds1 who was born in July 2005, one of the hottest summers.
