Just heard the most shocking thing said by a parent in a restuarant...

Picture the scene; Very family orientated middle class borough of London....
we were sitting having dinner with our DS when a very middle class looking couple walked into the restaurant with a baby of about 1 year. Not long after the baby bumped his arm and started screaming, so the dad picks him up and with that a glass went flying off their table onto the floor and breaks. The mother stood up in a busy restaurant and in a very loud voice said 'F,,,,,g Hell I can't do this anymore!' She storms out of the restuarant with the dad left holding a screaming baby. All of the other customers couldn't belive what they had just heard - 2 minutes later the mother comes back into the restaurant sits down at the table and continues with her meal as if nothing has happend??!!!! I've been to alot of restaurants and have never heard anything like it. How could she have the front to just resume her dinner like nother had happened? She should have run off to the hills and hung her head in shame!blush

sound slike she was very stressed. I don't find that shocking.

hercules1 · 28/06/2008 20:24

WOuld it have been more acceptable if it had been mcdonalds in a working class area and she'd looked like a hag? Mumsnet seems a bit barmy this evening...

nappyaddict · 28/06/2008 20:28

I like to think i dress well on most occasions but i have been to yell "leave me alone" at ds before. i think most mums have screamed something similar to that woman whether they are depressed or not.

I say Fuck this/that/it/off about 20 times a day, mostly mumbled under my breathe but sometimes not.

I called Dh a wanker today too.

I wear nice clothes and I don't think I'm a bitch.....so shouidl I stop swearing?

Jzee, I really think you've got to enter the real world mor eoften if that shocked you.

fruitstick · 28/06/2008 20:33

Did she no realise that Carluccio's is a swearing free zone. It wilts the rocket.

How selfish!

reethi96 · 28/06/2008 20:34

I thought you were going to say she had sworn at the child or hit him or something. I think we have all been that woman in the restaurant. There are terrible news stories at the moment about mistreatment of children, you need to read a newspaper.

minouminou · 28/06/2008 20:35

Hang on, I'm a scruffy get and swear like a trooper....which Crufts category do i fit into?
it's alwys the tiny little things that send you over the edge - the fact that the woman said "anymore" means she's had a right old time of it lately.

FrannyandZooey · 28/06/2008 20:36

ooh avi

you are being all masterful and cutting on this thread

it's giving me shivers all down my spine [leer]

nappyaddict · 28/06/2008 20:37

the scary thing is that jzee does in fact have children. i've seen some of her posts before. i think she has a ds and a dd. i am also afraid to say this isn't the first judgmental op i've read of hers.

well it wasn't me, not today anyway, but it has been in the past. in the street rather than in a restaurant but it was in a middle class, familiy oriented area.
and on those days i can live without the smug types. but, to be surrounded by Blu's suggestion, other mothers shouting 'me too'. what very heaven that world would be!

IAteRosemaryConleyForBreakfast · 28/06/2008 20:42

You'll hate me for this. One night last week, after spending yet another long night trying to keep it together settling the unsettleable baby while exhausted from working 10 hour days on next to no sleep, I came downstairs, unplugged the (screeching) baby monitor and threw it and broke it.

I'm thoroughly ashamed of myself for losing my temper so badly but you know what, I can totally understand that poor woman's feelings of frustration, lack of control, anxiety and exhaustion. That's what life is like sometimes, and losing your temper or crying out isn't right but sometimes it's what happens to us.

I would fully expect (and probably deserve) to be berated for breaking anything in temper but as mums surely we can all (most of us) empathise a bit.

I once threw a lavender farm plastic cow at the wall in frustration-it hit horns up and left two holes in the wall. I am not ashamed-I was at the end of my tether. The holes are still there and remind me of just how hard it is with a small baby! Have some compassion

Have just read this from start to finish for the first time and, like another thread in this group I just read, wondered if it is a wind up?

Original story doesn't quite sound believable (although I agree I've felt like doing it many times.)

Also, I can't seriously believe that the OP doesn't sympathise. We all go off our trolleys at times over the most minor things.

What's the name of someone who just goes on to groups to do this - a troll?

nappyaddict · 28/06/2008 20:50

jzee obviously has perfect children who sleep all night and never throw tantrums.

I've booted (and broken) the stairgate in a fit of temper, amongst other things, I've punched pillows on the bed, booted DS' trike around in the garden.....
wasn't desperately impressed with myself, but god did i feel better afterwards, and anyone who tells me that i should just suck up the frustration etc that goes with the daily grind can go jump
this woman in the restaurant probably went out for a few deep breaths (with or without nicotine!), calmed down, got a sense of perspective and carried on, which we all have to do.
