Tips for helping a toddler wear glasses without breaking them

So my 30 month old DS has been given a prescription today for glasses.

How on earth do you convince a toddler to wear glasses all day everyday? He is the most energetic, destructive child ever so I can juat envision them being snapped or smashed within a day. He also has severe meltdows so I am concerned the first thing he will do during this is smash them.

The doctor said we get free replacements but I am wondering if this applies to 100 odd pairs a year 😭

So please any advise on how to get a toddler to wear his glasses and also not destroy them!

Thank you!

My dds glasses had a strap that stopped them slipping down her nose and kept them in place. She never really threw them about

Tomato glasses. You will have to pay extra on top of the voucher for them but after 3 pairs falling off and being stood on in two months , these are pretty indestructible. They are also well designed to sit properly on small noses so the child sees through the centre of the lens as cheaper glasses tend to slip and child looks over top or at through top of lens.

sadly we found this was another area where NHS pairs that are “free” , were a false economy for the nhs to keep replacing for “free”. Def try other opticians as there are pairs covered by vouchers that may well be better fit.

They also gently hook right round ear for better security, bend easily and come with a strap www.tomatoglassesuk.com/store/c118/KIDS-E

This is really helpful thank you! They even have dinosaur ones which he would love.

I was expecting it to be a nightmare when we were told my DD needed glasses at age 2. She was actually great with wearing them and I only remember us needing a replacement once when she was about 4. So fingers crossed that you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

We started with miraflex which are really squishy (but DS was only one at the time). Had tomato since about age 4 and they are almost unbreakable. He did break them once but that involved dropping them over the edge of his bunk bed (he sleeps in them), then jumping off the bunk bed and landing on them.

if his prescription is quite strong, you just need to get through the first few hours and he will realise he can see better with them on.

on the first day we put DS glasses on, we decided to go for a bike ride to distract him (he was on a seat on DH bike). His helmet prevented him pulling the glasses off and by the time the helmet came off, he was used to the glasses and that was it.

Dd2 started wearing them at 4 so a bit older but I think she had struggled to see that as soon as she put her glasses on she would not take them back off again. She loves them. You might be surprised 😊
