Torn about trying for a third child after a termination

Please no judgement, this is a very sensitive subject for me and most likely many others, and I would appreciate some honest experiences from others.

I'm 36, married with two children (8 & 5). We have a few pets (dogs and cat) and both work (me part time, OH full). I absolutely love my job (mental health) and it brings me a sense of purpose, I became very unwell after the birth of my first child and once I recovered knew that I wanted to help others. My husband works relatively long hours in a job he also enjoys. Our children are typical of their age, full of energy, love being outside on bikes etc and generally have gotten easier as they've grown. Our eldest is no longer in mainstream schooling (whole other post) and is home educated, however I say this lightly as 2x days he attends a local forest school and 1x day he is cared for by my mum who takes him to a home ed group and online tutoring. 2x days I am with our eldest and tend to get out first thing, spend a couple of hours learning, back out in afternoon. Our youngest absolutely loves school, and like many siblings they are chalk and cheese. We live in a 'normal' three bed house which costs a tonne every month as our mortgage is a joke. We have lots of room downstairs and a fab garden. Upstairs is smaller, the third room is not big enough for a double bed. Eventually we will hopefully move closer to the high school although given the current climate I don't know whether this will ever be possible. We like to go abroad once a year although haven't managed this year again due to other financial pressures/cost of living increases. My OH and children have a few hobbies between them, my interests tend to go on the backburner as I don't prioritise myself then resent everyone else because of it stupidly. I have a wonderful mum who has been the rock of our family, she absolutely adores our children and helps us often. I also have a few brilliant friends locally who we spend time with occasionally.

So the main issue... I am torn immensely about whether or not to have a third and final child. It has been on my mind for the last couple of years and hit a massive wall at the back end of last year, which I hope I won't get a tonne of backlash for. I had always imagined having three children, and when pregnant with my second had a preference for a certain sex. This gender disappointment came and went very quickly, and I was fortunate to have the most wonderful experience second time round, I absolutely relished in being a mummy again but this time without any mental health difficulties. Since then I have thought often about how a third could fit into our family. OH thinks about the practicalities (rightly so) whereas it's more of an emotional pull for me. I can't put my finger on it but it's like a part of me doesn't 'feel done' if that makes sense? I think of my two children with a sibling and truly believe it would be a blessing for them. They fight like cat and dog most of the time and I wonder whether a small sibling would actually bring them closer together. Obviously there would be big age gaps, but I worry that 5/10 years down the line me/OH would regret not going for it. Now the shocker...

OH and I had gone back and forth about conceiving for months. This resulted in me going to have the coil removed, and us 'not trying' for a short period of time. Periods were irregular so I wasn't surprised when I didn't come on in November. I started to experience severe bouts of tiredness, to the point where I nearly fell asleep whilst driving. How it didn't occur to me that I was pregnant I don't know... after a trip to the GP I found out I was pregnant and my first reaction was 'oh no'. After around a week of discussing with my OH and close family members, we decided against it and I went ahead with a termination (tablets) being managed at home. The whole procedure was incredibly stressful, emotional and took a massive toll on mine and OH relationship. Sometimes I feel guilty for not taking more time to make a decision but ultimately I didn't want to go further along as the embryo developed and then not want to go ahead with a termination at all (I was 5 weeks). I was supported well by OH and my mum, and can speak openly about it with people I trust. I have not gone back to the GP for the coil to be refitted, which again is telling me I'm not done?

We're now nearly 9 months since having the termination and I honestly don't feel like I've gotten anywhere since then with this. As I type I feel sad and guilty for having the chance last year and not going ahead with it, surely I just need to close the lid and enjoy life with my two children I have. Part of me says to use this time to focus on myself and how I want life to be, part of me says to go with my heart and hope for the best. Please advise if you have helpful experience...

Sounds to me like you really want a third child OP. You’ve already thought about it for some time, and it’s been 9 months since your termination. How old are you?

idontwantdinneriwantsnacks · 15/08/2026 13:00

@RowsOfFlowers Hi, I am 36. I forgot to add that I worry about how we would cope with a baby plus two older kids who will have their own needs/clubs/schooling etc plus the worry that I could become mentally unwell again. It's a lot to think about...

It’s such a difficult one and of course a personal choice but these are my thoughts. You found out you were pregnant with a third and opted for a termination because your first thought was ‘oh no’. I think you maybe need to listen to that little voice as well as your heart. When it comes to a third child I genuinely do believe too many people think with their hearts and not their heads, at which point they end up miserable and resentful years down the line. That’s not to say you would with a third, but I do think you need to take everything into consideration. Finances/capacity/current children/mental health/work. Could you do it all? Three children is a lot! I once heard something that was really interesting ‘live 80% for now, 10% for the past and 10% for the future’ You need to do what’s best for you now and not in a hypothetical future you see in your head or you had planned, it rarely works out the same way as expected. Good luck whatever you choose!

Your existing kids are 8 and 5. You are right, there is a lot to consider - mainly for them, as they have no say. Do you really want that age gap? Just because you want one (hormones are evil things at best) is it really the best thing for your family? You could have had a third and chose not to, what has changed that make it ok now? Can you really give three kids as great a life as two? Sometimes the hormone driven fantasy is just not the reality.

I’m sorry you went through what you did that sounds tough but also brave to share. I’d write a pros and cons of having another with your OH. Also lightly talk to your 8 year old about more brothers and sisters and see what response you get. The two kids you have are more important than the one you’re considering having.

There is little in your post that tells me a 3rd child would be a good idea for you or your existing kids.
What if the 3rd has extra needs? Will your mum be willing to take on two kids?
What if the 3rd has more severe needs, disabilities, autism etc. what effect will that have on your existing two. What if your mental health issues happen again, what will that mean for your two kids, new baby and the rest of your family. It’s a big roll of the dice.
I suspect this is hormones playing tricks on you. I often felt like a 3rd might be a good idea in my late 30’s but no regrets ignoring them - teenagers are uber expensive!

I didn’t want to read & run so wanted to say I understand the absolute torment of this decision to have a third. It is all I can think about. I have a similar situation. Two boys 7 & 3, my absolute world & they get on so well (most of the time). Always on the fence about having a third but never committed. Husband happier at 2 but would go to 3. All reasons not to very ‘head’ - money, stress, time with existing two. I fell pregnant earlier in the year, was a huge shock & we were unsure what to do, after some long chats we decided to go ahead, got excited to be a family of 5 & then I had a miscarriage & now I’m here in a similar position to you wondering what on earth to do now. It’s now or never, I’m 35, husband is 40.
I started a thread a few days ago & had mixed responses - most saying to stick at two & be happy with what you have but as you already know MN can’t answer in response to your
actual life, only you can (which makes it harder)🫠
I don’t have any real advice, clearly as I’m in the same predicament but just wanted to say you aren’t alone xx

BabyB2023 · 15/08/2026 20:28

Just to add - I think if I felt like this after 9 months I’d go for it... that’s quite a while. Not sure if that helps at all. What does your DH think? X

HeathisWealth · 15/08/2026 20:41

I'm sorry you have gone through all you have.

What jumps out to me is that you will have considered all of the above before you were pregnant yet decided to terminate. That's a massive thing to do having a family already- that tells me deep down you're not convinced about having a 3rd.

My 3rd was twins!

How would you all cope if the child has additional needs? How would you feel about your choice (and the termination) then?

I recommend a big family. It's expensive though -even moreso now.

Good luck with your decision. I think you already know deep down.

Hotdoughnut · 15/08/2026 21:33

This is such a tough one, your longing is clear, and yet you decided to terminate presumably with best interests of your whole family in mind. We went for a 3rd, with a gap of 7 and 4 years. I won't deny our stress and mental load seemed to go up ten-fold, but it was a wonderful thing for us. We got the opposite gender to first two, which has added a lovely dynamic. Age gaps are sometimes an issue, but we manage it well I think. The thing that suffers most is I don't see my husband as we're usually off in different directions! What does your gut truly tell you? What do you envisage 5 years from now?

DreamingSunnyHolidays1234 · 16/08/2026 17:38

You've already been pregnant and terminated when reality hit home. Just move on. If one of your children is home ed, they must have issues. You have plenty going on.

I agree with this - you stopped using birth control, got pregnant and changed your mind. Stick with that decision. You obviously felt there were good reasons for not going ahead.
