Advice on 4 year old

My 4 year old starts school. My other children have always been chunky then had growth spurts and ended up tall and stretching. My daughter hasn't done that yet. She eats fairly healthily and is reasonably active, it is hard to know what is happening at nursery though. My 2 questions are should I see my GP for advice or start some reduce eating type plan? I have ordered plus size summer dresses but not sure if they will work, any advice on school uniform?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Don't put a 4 year old on a diet without medical advice.
See your GP.

Has she been weighed and measured? Is she following a percentile line in her red book?

What is “fairly healthy” and reasonably active?

I would be looking at making little tweaks that she won’t notice diet wise and upping activity as much as possible. At 4 she doesn’t need to know anything about it.

Definitely don't put her on a diet.
Increase activity and help her with food choices.
Cut out snacks and offer water

The answer is probably to cut down on unhealthy snacks. How often does she have biscuits / cake / chocolate etc?

countrylifeorcitylife · 10/08/2026 12:40

what size uniform is she in?

My friend’s son became significantly overweight during early primary school. She has made an effort to make family meals healthier but what has helped the most is activity. He does two sports and cubs. The sports mean he is doing training/ matches 3-4 times per week and he loves to practice in between.

He is tall and is built like a rugby player (has been since he was born) but his weight is significantly more under control. 2 years ago he couldn’t keep up with my son and now he can.

Don’t reduce eating unless you mean reducing things like ice cream, crisps and sweets. increase activity instead. If she is still only 4 you can contact the HV for advice.
