I just bought my 8 year old daughter 50 books for the summer holidays

As its the summer holidays I decided that I would let my 8 year buy some books for over the summer. She absolutely loves to read and I realised that it might be nice for her to have some new books to read over the next 6 weeks.

So I ordered her some books. However most of the books I ordered were series. I got a few individual books. But most of the books were series. Meaning I didn't really calculate how many books I was actually buying. My plan was, wait until all the books arrive, put them all in one big box and give the box to my daughter.

The last box arrived today so I went into my room and got every book and series out of their boxes....and I realised...that's a lot of books. So I decided to count and there is 50 books. 50! When you're buying book series, it's easy to forget how many books you are actually buying.

I gave my daughter the box and she is extremely happy. So seeing her smile was worth the financial cost of all these books.

Let's just hope my husband doesn't want a divorce after seeing so many books. Was this financially responsible? Nope. Do I regret anything? Nope.

Now my 4 year old wants some new books too 😭 Thankfully the books he would read are a lot cheaper lol

If any of them are the diary of a wimpy kid box set my 8 year old went through 20 odd books at a rate of one a day so you might well need this many!

Ah I got carried away and did exactly this last year but DD got overwhelmed and did t want to read them (this is the right number of books for her rate of reading, that in itself was not a mistake). I’ve gone back to giving one book at once now and hiding the rest in the loft til needed.

i do find if you buy whole series it works out at £2 per book and therefore probably not worth the time to search charity shop/library.

Both my son and daughter loved to read. When we went on holiday to Ibiza I used to take about 30 books with me, Sheltie, Lemony Snicket etc and yet we’d still end up in island books buying more!!! Luckily we had an excellent bookshop locally that sold second hand children’s books so it didn’t cost the earth. I think what you’ve done is wonderful and hopefully she will continue her love of reading into adulthood.

I love kids who read! I always tell my daughter that I’ll buy her as many books as she wants 😁 enjoy the books!

How blissful for her but even more lovely is your attitude to her reading.
As even a young child I was told if I had nothing better to do than sit with my nose in a book wasting time then I had time to help with chores.
We had very few books in the house and I used to have to hide to be able to read. This maybe is the reason why I hoard books now!

Oh I loved reading as a child. As a teen I spent hours at the library sitting on the window seat and reading all sorts of (sometimes unsuitable) books. They gave me an adult library card so I could borrow more books at once (not unsuitable ones though).
I had good friends, a hobby, and I played a lot outside and I also really enjoyed watching telly. It was a lovely childhood really. Good on you and your DD

We used to go to jumble sales in the 70s and there were always lot of childrens books for pennies.

We used to buy loads.

See while I know charity shops, Vinted, libraries exist, there really is something very lovely about brand new books, especially children’s ones. I will hang myself on that particular hill. Waterstones is my happy place. I suspect perhaps some have more inspiring local libraries than we do!

That's great, I remember buying lots of books for mine though maybe not 50 in one go, a couple at a time.

Mine would make a good dent in those over the summer. She’s been known to read a 400 page book in a day!

Can just 2nd this. I work in Oxfam and we get the most brilliant books in for kids of all ages.

Just slightly off topic but please remember the library (if you have one), it really is a case of use it or lose it these days.

That's lovely. My two are big readers, I normally buy them secondhand on eBay. They are so cheap and often with quick cheap delivery.

You have a designated room exclusively modelled and designed as a library in your house, but you think books in charity shops are expensive? Sorry if I misunderstood?

I'm embarrassed I've been on 1 book for about a month. I'd be significantly older by the time id finished those.

Or us your local Library. Ours allows borrowing of up to 20 books. Also has subscriptions to magazines. Has audio books too for looooooong car journeys.

That would have made me so, so, excited as a child. It sounds like your daughter really appreciated it. A new book is an unopened treasure chest.
