This is probably a really thick question but what do you do about a toddler who keeps standing up in the bath?

Are there any techniques I'm supposed to know about? I usually get to him fast enough to stop him cracking himself on the jaw but he has slipped once or twice and nearly given me heart failure. Alternatively is there a full length bath mat you can buy??

Does he like having a bath? When ds was small I used to take him out of the bath if he stood up, not angrily but just in a "oh you must be ready to get out if you're standing" kind of way.

Of course that only works if your ds likes being in the bath, if he doesn't and you try this technique then it will result in him standing as soon as you put him in.

i just sit next to the bath and tell them to sit down, worked on ds but dd is a bit more wilful. You can get long mats - try boots, but they do not cover the whole bath.

He does like the bath yes. He has a non-slip bath mat but it's much shorter than the bath (which is very long to be fair).

I have tried the 'ah clearly you've had enough, you're getting out' technique' but then he just cries

Often I tell him to sit down and he does so I think I'm getting through to him but it's may just be coincidence. Other times he just ignores me completely.

Hmm - maybe I should try the 3 strikes and you're out method, even if it does make him cry.

Tell him to sit down. Give him a couple of chances, if he persists in standing, take him out of the bath.

serenity · 25/06/2008 19:29

I just used to let them stand, but I'm obviously in a minority we always used a long length bath mat though - Boots did them, as do IKEA (which is where I get them now,as they're really cheap but quite narrow))

Seona1973 · 25/06/2008 19:37

I just let them stand up too. I got a full length bathmat from jojomamanbebe.

ThingOne · 25/06/2008 19:41

I have a full length bath mat and let them stand up too. It passes soon enough.

Spoo · 25/06/2008 19:53

I have full length bath mat and let them stand if they want.

cass66 · 25/06/2008 21:19

try a shower??? give him the choice between the 2. Or ignore it and hope it's a phase and it will pass.

MsDemeanor · 25/06/2008 21:20

Have a bath with him?

orangehead · 25/06/2008 21:24

ds1 always did this infact in even took his first steps in the bath, strange child. Just keep telling him to sit down and being extra viligent with hands at the side incase he does slip. unfortunely some children this age are very strong willed

squeaver · 25/06/2008 21:26

Sit down please

Sit down please

If you don't sit down I'll take you out of the bath.

If you don't sit down I'll take you out of the bath.

Take him out of the bath

EBenes · 25/06/2008 21:32

Mine likes to stand. I have a good long bathmat from John Lewis, so there's no slipping (well, almost none). I put little toys on the floor of the bath under the bubbles and say 'Do you want to sit down and find the little fox?' and usually it works. Not necessarily for long.

Sidge · 25/06/2008 21:34

Buy two bathmats.

spicemonster · 25/06/2008 22:08

Right so I need a longer bathmat and more determination (sit down, sit down, right that's it) when he wails when I take him out.

EBenes for some reason 'find the little fox under the bubbles sounds rude. (sorry have had a glass of wine)

Tescos do a long bath mat. Ds loves to stand up/dance/ generally mess around in the bath, and thats fine with me. Have never tried to make him sit down and don't see te point tbh.

Jas · 25/06/2008 22:18

I've never tried to stop him. No bath mat, either.

He has never fallen, but does deliberately throw himself face first into the water. Maybe we are both a bit odd

EBenes · 25/06/2008 22:19

"for some reason 'find the little fox under the bubbles sounds rude. "

Hee hee, it does a bit! I just happened to do it with a little fox this evening. A real rubber fo... .oh, I should stop before it sounds worse.

cornflakegirl · 25/06/2008 23:58

I never really bothered making DS sit down. No bath mat. He used to chuck himself down on to his knees. No real damage, and it seemed to amuse him. He grew out of it.

nappyaddict · 26/06/2008 00:00

we have a normal length bath mat and i allow ds to stand in the bath.

taliac · 26/06/2008 00:01

Extra long bath mat and I let DD stand if she wants.

She slipped a couple of times before the long bath mat, but I'm always right there and no harm was done.

gomez · 26/06/2008 00:02

Let him and then catch when he falls over - works for me. Why is it such a no-no?

gomez · 26/06/2008 00:05

ah, make sure enough water in the bath however. when sitting down at least up to waist and sometimes armpits.
