Best stair gate options for top and bottom of stairs?

Hi everyone, can anyone recommend a good stair gate for a staircase?
My 1-year-old daughter has started climbing up and down the stairs, so I want to make sure she’s safe. I’m thinking of installing one gate at the bottom of the stairs and another at the top.
I’ve seen two main types:

  • Pressure-fit (no drilling required)
  • Screw-fit (drilled into the wall)
My main concern is how safe and secure the pressure-fit gates are, especially for the top of the stairs. Has anyone used them, and would you recommend them? Any advice or product recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I’ve always preferred screw fix ones.

The best one we’ve had is one that’s a material that fully retracts when not in use. No bar at the bottom to trip over.

No gate at the top of the stairs. They’re incredibly dangerous because if a DC climbs them, which is likely because toddlers be toddlers, they’re now falling down the stairs from a height. If you want to contain them safely upstairs then gate their bedroom. As for drilled or tension, go with whatever fits securely. We always had drilled ones as the tension fit didn’t seem compatible with wonky ornate Victorian doorframes.

I’m not sure this is helpful advice to the OP. I have never been in a house with a mobile baby that doesn’t have a gate at the top of the stairs. I have never heard of friends having issues with a baby climbing over them. If they’re a toddler and big enough to climb the gate they’re big enough to learn how to use the stairs safely but it take time to reach that point.

The NHS advice is to use safety gates on stairs until baby is at least age 2.

A lot of people only have a gate at the top because it’s the risk of baby accidentally falling down that’s dangerous.
