Embarrassment at the supermarket

First time out with my toddler and newborn baby to the supermarket. Put baby in the carrier and went to lift toddler into the trolley, when she shoved both legs down one of the leg gaps (instead of one leg through each) and got stuck. So I was completely stuck with toddler half in/half out the trolley seat unable to unwedge her, whilst she’s screaming her head off etc. I had to desperately ask a lady to help pull toddler out!!!

Feeling like a total idiot and an incompetent mother. Really knocked my confidence. Is it just me that struggles with these basic things?!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
LoafofSellotape · 29/06/2026 16:08

That could happen to anyone and it was unfortunate it was on your first trip out. Have a cuppa and try again tomorrow 😊

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/06/2026 16:09

Ohhh honey - don’t worry! Just getting out of the house with a toddler and a newborn is a win - you are doing so well. I am sure no-one will have thought badly of you - to be honest, I suspect you are being your own worst critic (I recognise that, because I am SO good at putting myself down).

Snuggle your babies and have a hug from me - you are doing brilliantly!

MyArtfulGreySloth · 29/06/2026 16:10

Oh bless you, don’t be embarrassed, that’s toddlers for you. I’d have happily helped you out and wouldn’t have given it a second thought. You’re doing great.

Literally done that myself about 3 times. Honestly wouldn’t give it a second thought.

Topseyt123 · 29/06/2026 16:14

Don't be embarrassed. This could happen to any parent of small children. I'd have offered to help you if I had been close by.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/06/2026 16:16

The first time I took ds1 to the supermarket on my own, I thought I was doing so well. I got him in the sling, did all the shopping and then, when I got to the till, I found out I couldn’t reach the shopping at the bottom of the trolley because I had him strapped to my front. Someone had to help me unload it.

youalright · 29/06/2026 16:17

I work in a supermarket and this honestly happens all the time. Absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about

Glendaruel · 29/06/2026 16:19

While unpacking at the checkout my daughter got hold of tea bags and manage to open them, she was scattering them like confetti. The shop assistant was lovely despite me offering to pay for them and went and got me a new pack. She felt I might need a cuppa when I got home.....

Glendaruel · 29/06/2026 16:20

Then there was time my daughter grabbed a box of eggs while in her pushchair. The shop assistant did say its a stupid place to put eggs and she wasn't first toddler to "help"

Givemeachaitealatte · 29/06/2026 16:22

Oh I've had screaming meltdowns in supermarkets (and that's just me 🤣). The art of not giving a fuck is highly recommended with small children, who are as lively as mine. It's like we all enter a twilight zone in the supermarket - the lights, the noise, the choices, it's sensory overload.

Don't worry. You aren't the first or the last to do that!!!

CanOnlyBeMyself · 29/06/2026 16:29

Ah don’t worry OP. They’re wriggly little things, toddlers. It’s a shame it happened on your first outing but please don’t let it knock your confidence. Before you know it you’ll be walking around the shops with little stickers on your face that you’ve forgotten are there, while a strand of spaghetti hangs from the seat of your trousers to the knowledge of everyone but you. It’ll all be worth it x

Icecreamandcoffee · 29/06/2026 16:32

You and pretty much every toddler parent has had something like this happen. Do not worry about it.

If I had been around I would have given you a hand straight away, probably said "mine would do the same" laughed with you and not given it a second thought all day.

No one will judge you at all.

Ignore the tutters, it's usually the case that they had small children a very long time ago and have forgotten what they are like, or not had children at all. In the rare case they may have had one of those rocking horse poo children who toddled within arms reach silently behind them at all times and kept their hands and feet to themselves, sat nicely in the trolley and touched nothing and made 0 noise, ate every meal, slept all night and went down for naps with no struggles. The rest of us all remember the days of toddlers and all think thank God it's not me today, good luck fellow soldier.

Have another go tomorrow and keep your chin up.

TheCurious0range · 29/06/2026 16:33

It happens! DS locked himself in DMs car as a toddler and she had to call the fire brigade to get him out. She ran a private nursery for years!

We have all been there with the stickers.

In my case the baby and toddler work together to make me look like the most ridiculous hot mess to walk the planet. Toddler grabs a mini trolley and decides to play supermarket sweep whilst baby grabs my top, pulling it down so my boob is hanging out in the middle of the supermarket whist slapping my boob and giggling instead of feeding, all the while it's 34 degrees baking hot and the supermarket aircon is "broken".

sassyduck · 29/06/2026 16:37

These things happen. Don't let it knock your confidence too much! Try to get out again tomorrow.
Give yourself a break. It does get easier.

Lomonald · 29/06/2026 16:37

Oh my eldest is 33 and I used to do this ALL the time she was a little so n so going in the trolly staff were always helpful and helped me get her out .I once did it trying to get her in a baby swing, 😳 @wanderingwillows stuff like this happens we are all human and toddlers don't always cooperate, don't think about it anymore.

mondaytosunday · 29/06/2026 16:42

Every sympathy from me and any parents with young kids will have experienced some sort of thing at some point! My mum always told us about the time my angelic sister (she really was) had a full on lying down kicking and screaming tantrum on a zebra crossing on Kings Rd. Never before and never after.
Unfortunately this will not be the last incident of this kind! You can only do your best.

Clickrodio · 29/06/2026 16:45

If it makes you feel better I have whacked my kids head more times than I care to admit on the car door frame getting them into the car.

It happens to the best of us, chin up!

Krobus · 29/06/2026 16:46

Things like that happen even with one child. We were once walking along when we came accross a neighbour with their toddler firmly wedged in some railings. It took four of us to wriggle her out.

JessTheCat98 · 29/06/2026 16:53

When my son was about 2 he was being a menace in a retail park car park. Trying to run off, wouldn't hold my hand, etc, and just generally being a danger. So I picked him up under my arm (was pushing the baby in the pushchair in the other) and marched him back to the car screaming (him, not me). In all the kerfuffle, his wellies fell off and a very kind who woman came running after me with his wellies (and was brave enough so shove them back on his kicking legs), said "You're doing a grand job, love, we've all been there!"

Honestly, it is just one of them things. It was unfortunate it happened on your first trip out, but don't let it knock your confidence. You'll look back and laugh one day x

Teaandtarot · 29/06/2026 17:01

Having a baby and a toddler is hard, you will soon get in the swing of things being out and about with them

Hopefully you can laugh about that one day !

Don't worry about it too much - I only have a 9 month old but it's great reading these posts and hearing it happens to most people!

Nursemumma92 · 29/06/2026 17:28

I literally did this with my 3 year old today and I haven't just given birth or have any younger children. These things happen, you are far from incompetent!
