my dd refused to wear nappies anymore at 2.5 and was dry day and night straight away as a result which was fantastic. however she also started witholding her poo and gets very upset/ stressed when she needs to go.she gets very upset about going near the toilet/potty at these times and often ends up just doing it where ever we are stood .she is very happy to use the potty or toilet for wees.her diet is brilliant and so far we have avoided constipation as she currently cannot seem to hold it more than 48hrs( before potty training she went once or twice everyday)but i am concerned that she will become better at withholding and that she will then become constipated too.. i might add that she refuses to put a nappy on to poo so that is not an option.. i also cannot pinpoiint any painful pooing experience she could have had as she has never been constipated in her life! out of desperation today i consulted a homeopath and he did prescribe for her but i got the sense he was unsure of how to treat as she is not constipated.. has anyone got any positve stories of how to overcome this? help please!

I had this with ds at 2.5
At first he would only poo at night in his nappy which was usually just as we put him to bed!, we put a potty in his room at night and eventually he used it instead of the nappy. This lasted a few months and he started doing a poo before he went to bed. I gave him 'sticky stars'when he did a poo and we used to have a dance!
This phase will change with time.

Ds is now 3.5 and is using toilet happily to do all his business!

Also try a special secret corner to do a poo, some children find it embarassing - both my niece an nephew would hide behind the sofa to do their poo, or shut themselves in the bathroom.

thanks mumfor1 for such a quick reply. i have tried the secret place thing as my dad used to favour behind a curtain! am sure ther is something about her prefering to stand up to do it to be honest! will try stickers , although choc buttons have not worked think part of prob is my anxiety as i worry about this becomming a long term issue.

Lol. I remember this problem with DD. I must admit I stressed about it. No mumsnet in those days. She just held onto it and then inevitably kept messing herself. It sorted itself out eventually. The health visitor suggested putting her back in nappies which wasn't the answer.

I must admit that I did stress alot about it too. I would stop worrying, know it's easier said than done.
I have heard that doing a poo on a potty is not a natural sitting position so to speak, do you think you could try the toilet? Might be more comfortable. Also if she is tall a potty chair might be more comfortable, just an idea!

I used 'bright bots' training pants with ds when we went out and thought they were great, very bright looking knickers with a secret waterproof lining. Ebay has them.

Good luck and try to chill
