Keeping children cool on a Greek sailing holiday in August - help!

Hello,

At the end of August we are going on our first sailing holiday as a family, around some Greek islands. The sailboat can have air con at night when we are moored but during the day we won’t be able to.

I’m increasingly worried the heat is going to ruin it - our children are 15, 13 and 10, and the younger two are quite susceptible to heat. I have bought those neck fan things - any other solutions for keeping them cool so we can enjoy a holiday of a lifetime?

Thanks, as always!

Make sure there is ample shade and make sure they spend good amounts of time in it.

Drink lots. Cover up. Wear hats. Sun cream.

It'll be cooler on the water than inland and presumably you can do lots of swimming to cool off too.

If it's really unbearable I would plan to spend more time moored up than you might otherwise so you can have the AC on/a break from the heat.

we used to do those holidays. They just jump in the sea when they're too hot? It's quite cool if you're moving and you have a shade thing on the deck. I really don't remember it being an issue. Lovely holidays!

We didn't have aircon in the night and that was hard!

Hi, we’ve been on a few sailing holidays in Greece in August with our kids. You’re bloody lucky to have air con at night! In the day, you just keep in the shade of the canopy or jump in the water! A neck fan is unlikely to do anything really.

We did this a few years ago with kids much younger than yours, and I had similar worries - but it was fine!

When you're sailing the wind makes it feel cool anyway, you can always sit in the shade of the canopy - and when it gets too hot, just anchor up somewhere and jump in the water!

Have an amazing trip!

Just wait and see. I went to Greece last August and it was only 22 and a bit nippy sometimes.

We went sailing with our kids in Croatia when it was 35 degrees. No aircon. The nights were horrible but the days were absolutely fine - there’s a breeze if you’re moving or if you’ve stopped you’re either in the sea or wandering round a town.

May I ask who you booked with, as we’d love to do this if we could have ac at night!

Oh what you absolutely do need though is UV tops, ideally UV swim shorts too, and tons of suncream. So easy to burn when you can’t feel the heat due to the breeze and water.

Hats of limited use due to the breeze - but you can buy special caps with elastic and a clip attached so you can attach to clothes.

The sea breeze will keep them cool. Just make sure they have hats, shoulders covered and suncream on even if it feels breezy.
