Hi

i have a 10 day old son, who I believe has a sacral dimple. The nhs/midwife checks at birth have not noted this.

i recently lost my cousin who had spinal bifida so am concerned for my son. Will be contacting my GP Monday but anyone else babies had the same and not been a concern?

worried mama! New

All three of my children had various degrees of sacral dimple and were fine! When they were born the doctor took some measurements and checked they could see the bottom of it and it was a dimple not a hole (one child was quite deep) and they were all fine.

I noticed this on my son when he was born and asked the doctor and they had also noticed it already but said if you can see the bottom of the dimple it’s not a concern. That was 16 years ago. Obviously please also seek medical advice but don’t panic.

My son's wasn't noticed at birth. I pointed it out to paediatrician at our 2 week check (in the US), but like PP, it wasn't too deep. He had an extra toe too, so I was really concerned about other congenital issues, but he's a perfectly healthy teenager.

Both my sons had this. They're late 20s now, fit as fiddles, never been an issue whatsoever.

Same as others, both my kids have it and it's fine. My mother also said she has it so I guess it's genetic.

DS1 had this. No issues.

One of my children has this - it was deeper although seems less deep as the years have gone by and you can see the base. That being said following an MRI for an unrelated issue the doctor noted spina bifida occulta in that exact position but said lots of people have it but wouldn’t necessarily know as there is little to no effects

I have one! Aged 43 now and caused no problems at all

My son was also born with one, he is 3 now and there’s no concerns. His dimple is prominent but you can see the bottom of it, this lead the neuro consultant to not be concerned, they explained if there’s raised skin, can’t see the bottom of it, a lump, or hair present protruding from it , it’s possible there’s a spinal attachment or other issues. My son at the time was potty trained and was walking early so physically no concerns, they still recommended an MRI to confirm there are no concerns, we went through with this and it offered us the peace of mind all was fine and it wasn’t attached to his spinal cord. They did explain at this age if anything was found unless medicallly critical they wouldn’t likely perform surgery and would monitor it over the years. Thankfully all went well for us and we just keep an eye on any broken skin or inflammation keep it clean and dry- as high risk of infection spreading to the brain with it being so close to the spinal cord. Otherwise it’s quite common and my midwives also never noted it. We did his MRI last November 2025 at 2 and half years old so it’s relatively recent information.
