Tips for coping with a baby’s grunting at night

Has any one got tips on how to cope with baby grunting syndrome.
My 2 month old has had it since two weeks old.
It keeps me awake all night .
It will wake her up and won't settle again.
Docs have checked her over and said she is absolutely fine and will grow out of it.
Not sure how much longer I can function on no sleep.
She is only settled for about 30 mins after each feed.
I always wind her and she is bringing up wind and pooing absolutely fine.
Please any suggestions or tips would be great.

Separate rooms. You need sleep

Mine was better if held so we coslept and I held him. By 3 months it had stopped and he went back in the crib x

Own room. Our youngest was a nightmare snuffler and fidget, which was a nightmare. After two weeks of it, he was in his room. He slept fine and so did we.

I wouldn't be in a separate room, as thats not safe advice. Have you got a noise machine? I find that helps drown out the worst of it.

Probiotics

Please don't put her in a separate room at 2 months old - it's not safe! 🤦🏽‍♀️ I found that wax earplugs placed loosely in my ears helped a lot.

I didn't know it was diagnosable as an actual syndrome, but both of mine did this - we used to joke they were like little piglets. White noise on all night was an absolute necessity.

whatsit84 · 19/06/2026 11:49

I used ear plugs to muffle it. I woke up when they cried.

It’s not, it’s just something they grow out of as they get bigger.

Absolutely not own room. So unsafe. Use earplugs or noise cancelling headphones, I always did from day 1 of baby. It's just their digestion developing, it'll stop.

It does stop around 3/4 months.

DH and I used to alternate sleeping in another bedroom to get some proper sleep, away from the grunting. I also wore ear plugs as I'm a very, very light sleeper.

My DS actually slept really well WHILE grunting so we would be awake, listening to these horrible sounds (and him smacking his legs on the cot too), and we would get even more anxious because of how little sleep we got.

Thank you for advice
I am a very light sleeper.
We have tried a white noise machine but makes no difference .
Maybe I will try earplugs but a bit worried I won't her her cry.
Im definitely not ready for her to go in to her nursery yet .

You will hear her cry, I promise you! I hear mine cry through earplugs and in a different room (she's 20 months).

EarringsandLipstick · 19/06/2026 15:55

Do not put her in a separate room. Crazy advice

it’s just a stage OP, it’s not a syndrome. I’m not saying it’s easy, but it’s absolutely normal. Share the night wakings with your partner. It will pass, soon.

Savvysix1984 · 19/06/2026 16:55

Ear plugs. You will still hear your baby cry. I wore them when dd was a baby (still do due to dh snoring). Any baby noise would wake me up when I was just baby moving/ farting.

Yes this.

Speaking as someone who regularly has to share a commuter train with shrieking teenage girls, earplugs really don't entirely block sound, just take it down enough you can tune it out. And I use Honeywell construction ones.

You could also get one of those Angel Care alarms?

Bloop1986 · 19/06/2026 17:31

Loop earplugs! Can get ones that dull noise but can still hear! I found them useful after having my children! I could hear enough that id wake when needed but not by the grunting etc
