Best thing for non swimmer in pool

What is the best thing to help DC in the water. Very (over confident) 6 year old who is very big for age is in age 10 clothes so arm bands are quite tight and can't find vest in age 10

What do people use in the pool on holiday to help with independent swimming

My daughter had a noodle and was fine swimming with that until she had the confidence to let go.

KnickerlessFlannel · 16/06/2026 12:40

I agree that a noodle.or float is good as they can naturally decrease their reliance on it.

Konfidence have a swim vest that goes up to age 12, their YL sizing is for 9-12 year olds.

We had my 9 year old in one until he outgrew that size banding too.

They do also do teen and adult ones.

Is there significant SEN? If not I’d just have him stand in the shallow end and teach him how to float on his back and eventually doggy paddle. A child that big that can’t float is a huge risk for drowning.

Floppyearedlab · 16/06/2026 12:50

Arm bands are ab absolute no. Crap for younger children too. They hinder progress when you eventually teach them to swim.

You need to supervise OP. And ultimately he needs to learn to swim.

Take them every week to the local pool and make it fun. They’ll be swimming before you know it. Do some lessons too to get proper technique, but I think having fun is as important.

Henriettina · 16/06/2026 12:59

Definitely noodles. I know an 8yo with quite significant SEN who uses one (supervised!) to have a lovely time in the pool.

Happytaytos · 16/06/2026 13:02

Supervision and one of you in the pool at all times with him.

Noodle and teach him to swim unless severe SEN.

Is he so big for any reason?

Puddle jumper

No floatation aids, just stick to the shallow end and bring toys to play. Watering can, cups, boats, sinkies if he will dive under to get them. Other than that, a pool holiday is only so fun with a child who doesn’t swim unless he enjoys the water. Just plan in lots of other fun things, beach, days out so it isn’t just every day at the pool.

Shell204 · 16/06/2026 15:41

I will always be in the pool with.
Yes our local pool is now back open after being closed for a lengthy time and started swimming lessons last friday but we go away next saturday.

Pool noodle or float, you in the water with him within arms reach till he can swim.

Bitzee · 17/06/2026 15:29

I would say nothing for a 6YO, if you must then a noodle. It’s a great opportunity to get him swimming; you really don’t want to hinder that with flotation aids that keep them in an unnatural position like arm bands or puddle jumpers- these are best for babies/young toddlers that aren’t capable of swimming properly.
