Regular fevers at 13 months, normal?!

Our little girl is 13 months and we've had pretty persistent fevers every month (sometimes they can last for a few days). She started nursery a few months ago so I expected illnesses etc but is this normal? We've had two rounds of antibiotics for ear infections.

I'm not talking just over 38, it's like 39/reaching 40. We've gone to A&E once when she spiked over 40 and was really tired but they didn't seem that concerned! We just waited until it eventually came down with a big dose of Calpol and ibuprofen and then they sent us home.

She's just got another fever (39.9) but no obvious cause, no runny nose or cold etc.

She's been teething constantly, basically a full set of teeth already so not sure if that has made things worse.

DSs both used to spike fevers like that whenever they had the slightest sniffle. DH’s family collectively sighed and said ‘oh, yes, DH did that all through his childhood’. Argh! DSs still do as soon as they get colds but I’m much less concerned as they’re healthy 10 and 13 year olds now. Deep sympathy, it’s terrifying when they’re that small.

Was she regularly going to playgroups, etc., before this?

It's eased now that it's summer (of a sort), but for a while my baby was CONSTANTLY sick. I mean three weeks of various illnesses followed by a week of good health, rinse and repeat for about five months. I went to the GP because I thought there had to be some underlying cause/something wrong, but GP (two kids) just cheerfully said 'nope, totally normal'.

Thank you both, that's really reassuring!

We were going to playgroups before nursery but I think she's much closer to the other kids and germs at nursery.

A high fever must just be her bodies way of dealing with it!

If it feels "wrong" at any point, take her to a&e. For a little one the staff wouldn't mind if its nothing. Go with your gut.

My DD got some new awful virus with fever and general misery every 2-3 weeks for the first winter at nursery. The 2nd winter we still got some but not as bad and the 3rd winter we still have a new virus every 2 weeks but they mostly just cause snotty noses or coughs.

Mine's a vomiter (including with COVID & RSV). My friend's son has constant ear infections. I think many children have their own unpleasant vulnerability to certain types of bugs :(

@OtterMummy2024 oh no, I think I'll take the fever over vomitting 😬

Reassuring to hear everyone's experiences though, we'll ride through!
