Hello,
I am wondering if any other parents have knowledge on how the education marking system goes for primary years. My youngest is in p3 we stay in Scotland.
My son has been off school with a condition which school are aware off.
My question is can my son be marked as being in school although he is not in the building or been given any form of work home to do etc?
Thanks from a very confused mum.

If he is not in school then no.
However you are less likely to be fined as the absence will be authorized
You may have some follow up to see how best your son can be supported as his attendance isn’t ideal.

No he can’t. Is this what they are doing? Image if there was a fire or something and they’re looking for you dc because he is recorded as being in school.

There are codes for being educated off site, but if he is just ill at home, then no, he shouldn’t be signed in as present. It should be just an authorised absence

Ow his attendance isn't ideal because of school negligence. He has currently got concussion just now. He has been off unwell a lot this year and has caught multiple viral infections too so can't send him in genuinely not well.

And nobody is saying it is due to negligence. But he can’t be marked present if he is absent

But there are many reasons for absence and those who are not at fault like him need and deserve support

I thought exactly the same. But really just unsure of how the whole education department works, there has been times my little one been marked off and he has actually been in school? This was a worry also and I'm having to let the admin staff know of errors but surely this shouldn't be my job? Thanks for your input as I'm on same page as yourself.

Yes very true, he does deserve the correct treatment and support from the education I'm putting my trust into.
I just confused why he is getting marked as present when he is not in the school, I'm doing my own work with him at home steadily (not to much because of concussion) but I refused to send him in to potentially sustain another injury, could he be getting the mark as present because he should be in school but can't attend? Ow I've no idea hence the advice needed.

Okay yes I thought this also, okay Thankyou for the input. I've no idea why he is getting marked present when no were near the school and that's for both morning and afternoon, it will definitely need investigating as I personally don't feel it's right and I need answers, my trust is already at a low just now with incidents within school and them not believing my child, hopefully there is an explanation about this from the relevant education department from my area. (Fingers crossed).

Oh right, I thought he WASN’T marked as present and you wanted him to be.
That is odd. He should be marked as absent

Jellycatspyjamas · 09/06/2026 18:49

It’s not the first time I’ve been contacted to say my DD isn’t in school when I literally handed her over to the teacher. Admin mistakes aren’t uncommon either the teacher marking the wrong child absent or it not transferring to the computer record properly. I’d send the school the list of dates you’re querying and let them sort it out. Or tbh I wouldn’t, I’m not worried about their primary attendance record, I know where they are and why.

No no far from it, I want the correct markings for my son for his safety and for my records for his appointment at hospitals etc. anyways thanks I was confused myself with some of your advice but we got there in the end. That's three people who have told me same and he shouldn't be marked in and I'm fourth to agree with this so yeah it definitely needs looked into and why it's happening as just another negligent factor for me to see in the school unless there is a simple explanation. Thanks again.
