Temperature - Babies

Hello what is a normal temp for babies and when should I be worried.

Also - does anybody have the summer digital thermometer and know how to change it to f? it is in C atm which doesnt mean much to me but it is flashing red to say too hot for my DD (6months).

Can teething bring up a high temp?

Normal temp is up to about 37.3 degrees C. Teething will make them run 'a bit hot' but not give them a high temperature. My GP said if it gets to 40, get worried but at 38 and below they are usually ok and don't seem too ill. Calpol or neurofen should do the trick though. Above 39, give calpol and if it hasn't come down in 20 minutes, give a dose of neurofen and if it hasn't come down in 20 minutes, take them in but not to panic. Also the latest advice is a warm bath (not hot or lukewarm, warm) and then air dry them will be the fastest thing to bring it down.

My DDs temperature is 99.7 - Is that anything to worry about? She has slept loads today and is in bed now. She is just under 6months old. She has red cheeks, so thought maybe just teething, but then she doesnt normal sleep much when teething, and teething powder hasnt helped her stop crying, which it usually does if its teething. Have just given her some neorofen before bed.

That sounds fine and it could be teething.

99 ish is normal
100 is a mild fever
102 is the equivalent of 39 - so calpol then neurofen 20 mins later if still high and warm bath
103 = 39.5 - as above but you want it down in 20 mins or take them in
104-5 is very high.

If you're worried always take them in / phone GP / NHS direct.

teething usually makes them very grumpy but a virus / bacterial infection can make them rather sleepy. Poor little thing and it's always horribly worrying isn't it. Just keep the fluids up and let her eat or not depending on what she feels like. Always see you GP if you're worried - they're very reassuring! Also - you will get a gut feeling based on how they seem in themselves. If you can't rouse them - whizz them in but if they will watch TV and engage in things around them (even if moaning!), then they're probably ok.

oh and the old glass test on any rash - if there's a rash anywhere on her body that does NOT go away if you press a glass against it / they find light and moving their head & neck painful, then whizz them in. You don't always get a high temperature for that.
