What age do you give Dc a duvet?

DD is almost one but it’s too warm the next few months for a duvet. She’ll be 16 months by October, is that old enough for a toddler duvet if it’s really cold? If so would it be safer to tuck it in or leave it loose?

This is the advice from the NHS. No duvet below the age of 1. It’s rarely really cold in October. My DDs didn’t have a duvet until they went into their first bed. They had a cot sheet and blanket and tucked in as suggested in this advice.

They still move around A LOT in their sleep which is why most people use sleep slacks until around 3 nowadays. Safety wise, you can give her a blanket, my 2 year has a thin blanket for naps but a sleep sack for night time. It's not about safety but comfort (yours too, as they will wake in the night if they're cold)

Gave mine duvets at 2.

I would not put a child in a bed in a sack. Most won’t get cold. Overheating is a bigger issue.

When they came out of a sleeping bag. Mine used sleeping bags (with feet once walking) until probably 3. Then when they lost the sleeping bag, they got a duvet.

My little one started using a toddler duvet around that age when it got colder. At 16 months it’s generally considered safe, but I’d use a lightweight toddler duvet and leave it loose rather than tucking it in tightly. Just make sure the room temperature is appropriate and there aren’t lots of extra blankets in the cot.

I think mine stayed in sleeping bags until 2 1/2 ish- although both were usually in my bed a good deal of the time. Young than that and they didn’t have the skills to tuck themselves back in so they didn’t stay warm enough.

I think we got a duvet 18m-2y because my LO wouldn't fit in the largest sleeping bags anymore.

Just after they turned 2

How many dc really get cold? Very few. The bigger danger is over heating. A lightweight duvet is fine and I’d follow NHS advice which doesn’t mention a sleeping bag!

Peonies12 · 04/06/2026 10:37

We're using a sleep bag at 19 months, but I was putting a duvet over her to if cold (she's in a single bed since 11 months). Don't waste money on a toddler duvet, just get a single bed and single duvet.

Mine does. Always needed 1-2 layers more than all the Internet/ NHS recommendations. His AC is at 24 Celsius at night and he needs long PJs and a 1 tog sleep sack. Otherwise he wakes 1-2 times a night at least and when I touch him, he's cold as ice. I'm the same, I need a duvet at 24 celsius.

They do make sleep sacks with different togs, you know? And overheating is an issue with newborns, never heard it being an issue in a 2 year old

Historian0111101000 · 04/06/2026 10:53

Not until 2. Even then, just a toddler duvet (100% cotton).

Mine just turned two but is still sleeping with the breathable blanket he used as a baby. After 30 minutes, he kicks it off and never wakes up, so I am assuming he isn’t cold.

OopsieeDaisy · 04/06/2026 14:37

Around age 2 but I waited for reasonably warm weather as they seemed to take a while to learn to stay under the duvet or put it back in if they got chilly. Always just left it loose. We used the ikea len cot duvet which is about 3.5 tog.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 04/06/2026 14:46

Sleeping bags for babies must fit around the shoulders so the baby’s head doesn’t disappear into them. At 1 year old plus, I cannot see the NHS recommend them. Not sure if babies die from hypothermia but blankets are safer for toddlers. Sleeping bags should not be used with a duvet either. Plus co sleeping has lots of warnings too. Up to 6 months, a cot in your room. If the temp is ok for you, it will be for a baby or toddler.
