Spporting graduates struggling with unemployment and rejection?

Son (22) graudated last summer with engineering degree. Since then he has been applied for 100+ jobs, had interviews, but never got the job. He volunteers part-time in a charity store and works for a sustainability charity. He is learning another language, and playing in a band. In spite of this, he is steadily becoming demotivated and demoralised by the constant rejection.
Parents of l-t unemployed young adults, how do you deal with this?

Son IS working in retail part-time for a charity shop and volunteering at an engineering associated electrical sustainabilty organisation. He is also learning a second languge and coding. What a fucking joke of a country where apprenticeships are a career path after racking up £60,000 in debt. No hope of moving out of home before 30,

I think you need to calm down. You keep saying he wants a grad job as though it’s his right to be given one. I wanted a grad job in 1999. I didn’t get one. They were competitive then. They are competitive now. I’m doing fine. I found another route. Part of that route was taking any job and doing a range of temporary jobs from a local recruitment consultant. And when I say any - I mean any. I packed juice in a factory on 12 hours night shifts for 6 months. I had a great degree in a great subject for a Russell group uni. Life is really hard right now for young people but being very aggressive about it won’t help your son. Do you know how I got my eventual break? I decided to flip it totally. I decided I’d research all the companies I wanted to work at which were NOT advertising any jobs at all and offer to work for one week for free. After the first week at one company I ended up staying there three years paid. I’d strongly advise your son does this. Do you know that most jobs are never advertised in the first place? Drop the idea that it needs to be a ‘grad’ job.

@anotherglass what fantastic news. The role sounds like a great fit for your son and a permanent one too. It was well worth the wait and heartache.I am so happy for both of you and wish him all the best.

Amazing news!

my wee Scottish granny always said “ whits fur ye, will no go by ye!”
