One-year-old not crawling or standing yet - anyone else experienced this?

My LO is 1 years old in 3 weeks and i know you shouldn’t compare children but compared to my first he feels really behind. Granted my 1st was very early doing things, but i thought by 1 years old we would be ‘further’ along with milestones.
He currently can only sit up unaided - very well - but that’s it.
He won’t crawl, won’t pull to stand or cruise furniture, won’t attempt to get toys out of his reach he just screams or gives up, does say any words but does babble and scream🤣
He was always fine with tummy time and head lifting but if i put him on his knees he just falls flat. If i stand him up holding onto to something he can weight bare but he won’t bend to pick up a toy or anything it’s like his knees are locked and he dare not move 🫣
Im just worried he’s REALLY behind and there are so signs of him ‘coming on’ with anything anytime soon.
Was anyone else’s baby like this?
Hes fine with everything else, a fantastic eater / drinks, picks up toys.

Just want to add - health visitor said they never get too concerned until they are 18m but that seems to long away!

Yes my daughter didn’t crawl until she was 14ths and didn’t walk until she was 20mths. Absolutely no issues after that and is about to turn 20

ethelredonagoodday · 29/05/2026 08:01

Yes, DS didn’t really do much at all until he was 16months. Just sat and looked at everyone. Like you I was slightly concerned, but once he started there was no stopping him! He’s now 13.

DS2 crawled at 11.5 months, walked at 15 months. Whereas DS1 walked at 9 months.

DS2 is more sporty than DS1, they’re teenagers now.

So still way within the reasonable range.

Mine was like this. She crawled a few days after her 1st birthday and started walking when she was about 14-15 months. She's 2y4m now and I honestly can't see any difference between her and other children her age with the running, climbing, jumping

TallSturdyGirl · 29/05/2026 08:11

Ds2 walked and crawled for the first time on his 1st birthday. He is really sporty now.

MigGirl · 29/05/2026 08:12

My DN never crawled, it's not actually classed as a development mile stone. Some go straight to standing and walking.

My sister said it was odd to see her son crawl as her daughter never did. She did learn to bum shuffle. But not crawling doesn't seem to be an issue. I'd probably work on helping him stand.

I think sometimes if they have older siblings they shout to get them to give them stuff as well.

mindutopia · 29/05/2026 08:53

It sounds like you’re pushing him too much. Don’t put him on his knees or try to stand him up. They get nervous and stop trying when it all gets a bit scary and uncertain. Just leave him to explore. The longer they have on the ground exploring before walking the better for neural development, so early walking isn’t a good thing really. Mine walked at 15 and 17 months.

Neither of my DC crawled, both started bum shuffling at about 12m and walked at 16m.

Both HATED tummy time and dc1 brought things to dc2 so no need for her to be mobile!

AprilMizzel · 29/05/2026 12:19

Friend had this - they did checks at 18 months with NHS pediatrician and found nothing - she was bottom shuffling at two still not pulling up and then a locum GP seen for another issue told her parents firmly to start pushing it to stop carrying her as much and enourage grabbing and standing - and that did work she was fine by 2 and half running round with other kids.

Mine all moved and talked early eldest was much younger than friend child - eitehr end of school year - but often seemed about same in development movement few years later couldn't tell the difference.

If you are worried see your GP - see what they say though I think it's a little early to be worrying about crawling and walking the not grabbing things is a bit odd but again may be my kids colouring my view.

Iocanepowder · 29/05/2026 12:22

Both mine were delayed walkers but both did turn out to be caused by other issues.

DC1 was diagnosed with hypermobility and needed physio to learn to walk. So that is maybe worthi looking into.

DC2 turned out to have very blocked ears caused by glue ear, caused by enlarged adenoids. Was walking fine almost immediately after surgery, so it was likely an inner ear/ balance issue.

If you can find a children’s physio to visit you at home, might be an idea to reassure you if you are concerned.

tillyfilth · 29/05/2026 12:23

Son didn't crawn until 15 months. No walking until closer to 2. He is a competitive athlete now.

suggestionswelcomed · 29/05/2026 12:26

My brother didn't walk or crawl till 18 months old. There was nothing wrong. I was walking at 8 months old. You can't tell which sibling was the early or late walker now. ;-) I'd get it checked with the health visitor for reassurance, but try not to worry too much.

BarnacleBeasley · 29/05/2026 12:32

One of mine couldn't even be bothered to roll over until 10 months. He caught up though and could jump with both feet off the ground by the time he was two, which apparently lots of DC can't.

Hallywally · 29/05/2026 12:41

My daughter didn’t properly walk until she was 22 months- we were starting to get concerned. She was late with all her physical milestones- including sitting unsupported- baby led weaning was impossible because she always slumped a bit in her high chair 😂

She did crawl a bit - can’t remember when but not a lot. She was mentally very physically alert- good speech and comprehension- just a very lazy baby! 😂 But she did get there eventually! I was apparently similar as a baby! She’s ten now and does move a lot more obviously but still has a focussed quiet personality where she can sit down for ages doing a task.

Makingtherun · 29/05/2026 12:42

Yes, my friend’s baby.

When I sat and watched it was because she was so well looked after…😉

Mum provided her with everything…toys picked up and given to her, food passed etc.

One of mine was a later mover, I placed his food on the edge of the mat, so that he had to think and move to get it, same with toys etc.
It built his resilience, perseverance and ability to move to get what he needed. 😆

TenderChicken · 29/05/2026 12:47

Yes, we actually got referred to have DD checked because she wasn't crawling at 12 months. The doctor gave her a quick go over and didn't think there was anything overtly wrong, so told us to wait.

I think she started crawling at 14 months and walked almost immediately after.

She's 10 now and absolutely fine mobility wise.

Denimbee27 · 29/05/2026 13:04

My eldest pulled up at 8 months cruised furniture and crawled at 10 months but didn’t walk until 18months
youngest didn’t pull up, stand alone or cruise furniture until 14months, she crawled at 11.5 months then walked at 18 months I had my concerns but doctors had no concerns said come back after she’s 18 months she’s had further issues with her joints and hyper mobility but doctors aren’t concerned she’s able to do most things

AmberM223 · 29/05/2026 17:58

Thanks so much everyone for your help! I’m not so fussed on the crawling (although would like him to so i didn’t have to carry him around the house haha) but it’s more when he’s trying to pull up, he can try with ALL his might and he just can’t do it, like he has really weak arms, and he just doesn’t seem to realise he can bend his legs, when he stands (with my help) he just locks them up and will absolutely not bend them!
I think i’ll give it till his bday and then contact the GP

Mine both took ages. 15-18mths. Absolutely no probs then or now. You’ll be just fine.

PaperAirplanesFlying · 29/05/2026 19:40

Honestly, yes I would be worried. I know people mean well, but I don’t think the reassurances are that helpful when it IS unusual for a baby not to be crawling/moving at all at 12 months. We aren’t great at preventative/early intervention stuff in this country, but I wouldn’t be happy with the brush off from the health visitor, and I definitely wouldn’t be waiting until 18 months to start looking into what support is available. In your shoes I’d be pushing for a physio referral (or looking into private physio, if that’s an option for you).

There are so many benefits to crawling for babies, it builds a huge amount of strength in their core, their shoulders, and their hands. It helps handwriting later down the line, it helps their sensory development, it helps with learning to use both sides of their brain. I’m not saying any of this to upset you, and obviously most babies that crawl/walk late do catch up, but I would
urge you to look into anything that can be done to help support him with his motor skills, so he can reach his full potential.
