Help! Dehydrated baby?

Fourlittlepiggies · 27/05/2026 03:02

As title says. Ebf baby is nearly 6 months, I’ve just woken up and her nappy is still dry from being changed at 8.30 which is unheard of. I’ve woken her up and fed her. She’s been much sleepier than usual in the hot weather but fine when awake.

I’m panicking. Is this an a&e job or wait it out for a while longer? Dr google says 6 wet nappies in 24 hours.

Keep offering her lots of feeds. More than normal. Maybe at least double.
if she is lethargic or her skin doesn't look as plump as normal I would head to A&E.

is she having a decent feeds when she is feeding. A simple dehydration test is gently squeezing their thumb nail, it will go white if it returns to normal colour in 1-2 seconds it’s fine, 3 or more they could be dehydrated.
just like adults appetites change in the heat, offer a feed often. If you are worried always best to get checked

Thank you! Decent feeds I guess but usually she spends a lot more time feeding (and less time sleeping…).

appetites can increase and decrease weather dependant, I don’t feel like eating much when it’s so warm. I was also told that when it’s hot breast milk becomes more watery to hydrate babies more.

Fourlittlepiggies · 27/05/2026 03:17

By the thumb nail test she is fine. When she has a wet nappy I will relax!

If she is actively feeding and draining the breast and no other obvious issues like lethargy when she does wake I would wait it out for a bit. Keep offering the breast and do some hand pumps to maximise the milk she is getting when she feeds. I have worried with little ones in the past and then the wee comes and it’s a huge relief.

Still dry. She shows no other signs of being dehydrated but I am concerned now…

Ring 111 if you’re concerned op

Scrap that, all good! Phew.
