In search of reinforced trousers / Valium.

My son is autistic and is ripping the seat out of his trousers on an almost daily basis. (You may remember me from other exciting threads such as “My son is destroying his shoes daily” and “Is 8.45 am too early to start drinking?” 😁

We tried putting waterproof trousers / shorts over the top to make the seat more slippery but this lasted about a week then waterproofs were ripped through too.

Can anyone recommend or suggest ideas for really tough, reinforced trousers or shorts? Uniform policy is totally relaxed so they can be any kind. I know there are tradesmen trousers but he’s not quite big enough - could maybe fit an xsmall men’s.

Looking to fit age 14.

I am spectacularly unoptimistic.

Why is he doing it - you say you’ve tried to make the seat more slippery so is it about how they feel on the chair? In which case would it be easier to change the chair?

When one of mine was 1 year old, he was an all-surfaces bum shuffle.. Obviously he was still in nappies, so he was pretty determined to drag his bum over pretty much any/all surface(s) especially concrete, gravel etc etc so his trousers lasted approximately 5 minutes before shredding. I got a friend who made clothes/did sewing repairs (knew how to do it properly) to sew a big, double denim patch over the entire seat/back of the thighs of his dungarees, and reinforce the inside leg seams. It actually worked really well.

Of course, his clothes were miniature, and he (finally) started walking a few months later, so it was a much easier project than yours.... But maybe something like that? Use less worn parts of old jeans to patch? Only thing is, you definitely need the help/advice of a sewing repairs person.

Actually ignore what I just said, that is total nonsense for a 14 year old size (tried to edit, but it wouldn't let me).

My boys wear work trousers from Hofer (equivalent of Aldi - kids sizes run to 164cm, then from around age 13 they started wearing XS men's with a belt). They are awesome, never ripped yet (whereas all their other trousers go through eventually, these ones have been handed down 4 children and are still OK) and cost about 10€. If Aldi doesn't do them, how about Amazon - something like this :

Maybe commission a seamstress to make some Corduroy trousers with in built shorts ?. Sorry just noticed he is 14 so maybe not elasticated waist

stillhiding1990 · 24/05/2026 12:47

Or try and order 2m material (ann old thick curtain to practice/ do a mock up) and get a pattern for an easy elasticated waist trouser and try to make them. Use chat got / YouTube. Appreciate time may not be available to you to do this, do you have any sewers in your family?

edit - Sorry just noticed he is 14 so maybe not elasticated waist and that there was uniform
requirements. Ignore my comment

Sorry if this sounds bonkers and as pp depends a bit why he’s doing it….. would he wear a kilt?

stillhiding1990 · 24/05/2026 12:54

Levi’s jeans?

TinyMouseTheatre · 24/05/2026 13:15

That’s not a I’ve had so can’t be of much use. Just wondering if an OT would be able to help?

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 24/05/2026 13:18

Mine wore black jeans until he was a bit lighter on the wear. And we got used to patching.

TinyMouseTheatre · 24/05/2026 13:29

And let me know if you find any Valium. DC2 who is also ND went out last night and I suspect may be waking soon. They’re going to be vile and everything will be my fault, as per usual.

lanadelgrey · 24/05/2026 13:42

Army surplus - my DS has been wearing them for years but is not ND, cadets wear them so smaller sizes available . They are camo or plain, cargo style but incredibly well made and with a v high thread count. Cost depends on state of them but nearly new have been £15 to £20.

Thank you for the replies so far, especially Peat and diesel and still hiding for their suggestions.
I will check out the work trousers and consider the sewing idea!

I should have said it’s caused by sitting outside and bum shuffling around on tarmac and sitting / sliding around on a grassy hill.
He is profoundly autistic and has this outside time through the school day to regulate. He can’t be stopped from doing it.

Bless him. When DS was going through his shoes and trousers within ten days, I was winding up to get cross with him when he told me it’s from kneeling on his own in the corner of the playground playing with his stones. That’s how he was spending playtimes.

Could he sit on a carpet square, tray or thick polythene sheet to slide down the hill?

Oh my goodness! A kilt will never work! The chafing!!

BertieBotts · 24/05/2026 16:55

Army surplus store is a great idea. I remember getting walking boots from there when I was about 12 and they were the best boots I ever had.

NoodBanaan · 24/05/2026 19:59

I do mountaineering and these survive sliding down scree slopes on your bum decathlon

NoodBanaan · 24/05/2026 20:02

I'm not sure how you'd attach it, but for canyoning you use these to slide down rocks to protect your harness and wetsuit. They're in destructible
seat protector

Thank you so much Nood - this is exactly the specialist niche trouser I was searching for! Really appreciate everyone else’s replies too.
