My 13 month old doesn't babble

She did a tiny bit (Baba) then stopped and hasn't for months.

She smiles, waves and makes eye contact. I'm desperate to hear her voice and have her say Mumma. Has anyone elses little one not babbled at this age then suddenly started?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Does she respond appropriately when you say her name? Ie: is her hearing ok?

NorthFacingGardener · 21/05/2026 11:16

Does she make other noises? (that don’t sound anything like words).

My DS didn’t say anything that could be classed as nearly word until he was over 18 months.

Might be worth seeing the health visitor if you’re worried - ours have drop in clinics or you can just call them for advice.

Kittycat2mom · 21/05/2026 11:17

Are they making any noises? Do they repsond to noises around them?
Have you been to GP or HV? If not you really need to see them, likely to get hearing tested 1st.

@firstpostnailsit I contacted the GP this morning to book a hearing test in, although she responds to loud noises and certain words so I think she'll be ok. The HV wasnt concerned and said to give it 3 months, I think its more a case of friends making comparisons and me being a first time Mum so not really knowing what to expect!

What do mean by babble? Mine always made random noise but nothing like words til 18 months.

VioletCookie · 21/05/2026 15:13

@NorthFacingGardener she makes some other noises but is a fairly quiet child aside from getting grizzly and moaning when she wants something 😅

Have spoken with the HV and nursery but they don't seem concerned just yet, it's more people making comment/comparisons that has worried me.

Thanks for sharing about your son, thats really reassuring.

@Kittycat2mom have spoken to both HV and GP. She makes the occasional noise but most whining/frustration sounds 😅

@Peonies12 as in Baba Papa Mama Dada, so not meaning anything but able to make those type of sounds. She doesn't do that at all and tends to make frustrated sounds instead if she wants someting 😅

Friends have commented that theirs all being a lot younger don't stop babbling, but that our DD doesn't

Mine never really did those sounds, she just randomly one day said 'mummy' and then hasn't stopped, probably at about 18 months.

Keep an eye on it but try not to worry. They all do things at their own pace.

My little nephew could say actual words by 1 (very advanced) but didn’t walk until 17 months.

Both my DS could walk by 9 months but DS2 didn’t say a proper word until after 18 months which is the cut off for the normal range. He’s nearly 2 and a half now and chats away all day.

Do you do lots of singing with her? My late talker would hum along to tunes really well but didn’t do the words.

WonderWeeksArentReal · 21/05/2026 15:19

She's still quite young. Does she point to things?

Hearing test is useful to rule out things like glue ear.

VioletCookie · 21/05/2026 15:23

@Peonies12 amazing, thank you for the reassurance 😊

@NorthFacingGardener we do, we sing and have music on plus I look into her eyes and talk while we sit on the floor together. She does the actions to songs so I dont think hearing is an issue

Shes been at nursery for a few weeks so aware its a big change for her, and that it should also then help being around the bigger kids who can talk/walk 🤞🏼just the annoying comparisons that get made by people which is a pain 😅

@WonderWeeksArentReal she does but I wouldn't say she points as what she wants, more she points randomly at things! She hears song lyrics and does actions so I wasnt overly worried about hearing, but am booking a hearing test in as the HV asked us to

That’s good if she’s pointing at ‘interesting’ objects because it’s showing shared attention. If you said ‘doggy’ would you look at the dog? Or ‘ball’ or anything like that?

VioletCookie · 21/05/2026 15:47

@FernFaery no not yet, her pointing is very random. I think she likes making the hand gesture but not pointing at anything directly! Or if she does its so random 😂
