Can someone claim Universal Credit for children without parental responsibility?

Hi, I need help regarding claiming UC for children, I have 20 month old twin girls and have full PR, Father has none and isn’t on their birth certificate. I have been informed that he has been telling people that he claims UC for my children. Would this even be possible for him to do this and how could I find out as surely people can’t claim without proving they have children?? Thanks everyone

Seems unlikely, you have to prove they exist by using their birth certificate so if he’s not on it then I can’t see how it’d work

Nope.

He would have to be receiving the child benefit. Are you claiming it in your name?

Thought as much but just seeing if anyone had experienced anything similar before I contact UC myself tomorrow, Seems he is playing the doting absent father to his friendS, He isn’t on birth certificate and never been part of their lives thanks everyone

Well, he can say whatever he wants to friends and family. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Doesn’t make it true. Though “I’m claiming UC for my kids” doesn’t exactly scream dad of the year to me. It screams someone who cares more about benefits than his children. Surely, his friends and family will never have seen the kids with him so they’ll know they don’t live with him?

UC may ask for BC as proof but this would be to show the children exist not who has PR.

They would also want proof to show to that his home is the children’s main residence and he is the responsible person. So things like letters from school GP dentist showing his address as listed. UC would also ask questions such as who takes the children to school. Who deals with appointments etc. if he doesn’t have the above no chance. Btw who claims child benefit is not relevant

To add if he was claiming for them and you are claiming for them UC will tell you they are part of someone else’s claim.
