What age did you stop using a baby monitor?

Just curious as I have one for my toddler and now he’s turned four I’m wondering if that’s a bit old for a monitor?

He still calls out in the night for us to come to his room if he wakes up suddenly and doesn’t want to be alone, or the sheets are wet from his nappy leaking (he still wears one overnight).

I am just wondering at what age other parents stopped using a monitor? Is 4 unusually old?

When it stopped working when DD was around 7. She liked having it in case of nightmares. I preferred her calling through the monitor rather than trotting downstairs a thousand times per night.

Our daughter started pulling wire out and messing about with it at 18 months so we had to take it down. Meant to get a different one but we never got round to it.

Slinkyminky22 · 14/05/2026 18:31

I still have one for my 4yo as we wouldn't hear her from downstairs. Its a video one that's as old as her, and it doesn't work unless it's plugged in anymore. I'm not buying a new one so that will probably be the reason we stop using it eventually, but no plans to yet.

We had one for DD1 until she was about 5. Just a sound (not video) one after about 18 months. She liked to be able to call to us, so we used it until she asked for it to go away.

frenchnoodle · 14/05/2026 19:06

Age I can't remember fully, late 4 or early 5?

BeeDavis · 14/05/2026 19:36

I’ve got a 4 year old.. still have one on him. Don’t necessarily need one but I like to know when he’s asleep. We’re due a baby next month and bought a new monitor with two cameras. Honestly at this rate I’ll have a camera on them til they’re teens 😂😂

ColloquialCat23 · 14/05/2026 20:16

When they were 2.5 and we started using it in DC 2 room but there sleep is pretty good and if they did wake up can hear them on DC 2 monitor if we are downstairs. During the night they just come and tap on our door and wait for one of us to get them. If we didnt use the monitor for DC2 I probably still would be using it though and it gets put in their room over night if they are being sick.

Rozendantz · 14/05/2026 20:18

Mine was about 7. In my defence, he was on a different floor to me...

mondaytosunday · 14/05/2026 20:24

About two. At that age perfectly capable of coming to us if needed, or shouting loud enough if frightened by a nightmare or something.

whatthehelldowecare · 14/05/2026 20:29

We were just talking about this! My little boy has just turned 2 and we still use one, however once we move him into a cot bed (which is imminent) then I think we’ll stop using the monitor, because then he could just come get us

PurBal · 14/05/2026 20:35

When they transitioned into single beds at about 18 months old. They can come and find me if they need me. And I can hear them if they cry (the lungs on a toddler are mightier than lungs on a newborn).

Georgiapeach21 · 14/05/2026 20:42

We have one in our girls room (5&2). I still use it a lot for the two year old (we have a camera facing each bed that can also rotate to view the whole room). I use them a lot in the daytime when the kids are playing in their room just to keep an eye

user293948849167 · 14/05/2026 20:54

When they stopped napping during the day, so around 2. We could hear them at night so didn’t need it.
We got them night lights instead when they didn’t need the monitor anymore

glaciercherry · 14/05/2026 21:49

Thanks for all the replies. Ok so it’s not unusual. I wasn’t sure if I was being overprotective. But through two closed doors I do worry I wouldn’t hear him if he cried out in the night and he’d be crying for a while before we’d hear him and wake up or he’d wake up the baby too.

We were going to do this, but then he stayed in the cot till nearly 3 and once he was out of it I worried there’d be something dangerous in the room I hadn’t thought of so wanted to see what he did in the night after we left and it just sort of stayed.

I think that sometimes with all the cameras 😂
I do like knowing when he’s actually asleep, versus playing about before bed or when he’s woken up in the night.

Mines 18 months and barely use it, and shes been in a bed since 12 months. Our house is small, we can always hear if she cries!

blankcanvas3 · 14/05/2026 21:57

My 3 year old still has one, she likes chatting to us through it. I would be fine not having one for her though

comoatoupeira · 14/05/2026 22:04

2 and 2 months, when he started sleeping through the night and reliably not waking after bedtime even if we make noise

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 14/05/2026 22:05

Never used one 🤷‍♀️

Ohcrikeycripes · 14/05/2026 22:07

Used it with my eldest until he accidentally broke it at about 9 months. Never used one with the younger two. Feel a bit bad now after reading this!

mindutopia · 14/05/2026 22:12

Probably around 2 ish during the night. We used it in the early evening maybe a bit longer because we couldn’t hear them if they woke up and we were downstairs.

But we stopped during the night maybe between 2-3. Whenever they could just get out of bed and come into us. No need for a monitor as they’d bring themselves to me and I didn’t even get out of bed.

Swissmeringue · 14/05/2026 22:15

Stopped using it at about 2 with my oldest and never bothered with our youngest. He slept in our room until he was 2 and when he went into his own room it was a bed rather than a cot so he could just get up if he needed us.

Nat6999 · 14/05/2026 22:23

Bought one & never used it, ds was a poor sleeper & ended up staying in our room until he was 18 months old before moving into his own room which was next door to our room.

Are you using pull ups or nappies at bedtime? We found the normal Asda nappies the best for overnights!
