Baby not taking formula on holiday

In portugal with our 7 month old and he isn't taking much formula. Has dropped from 7oz 4 times a day to 4 oz. He is eating breakfast and dinner plus a couple of pouches during the day to stay hydrated. He won't drink much water from a cup or bottle.

Happy enough in himself, fontanelle is fine but he is a bit constipated. Do I just treat constipation with prunes and not worry too much about forcing liquids?

How long have you been there? Are you using bottled water with the formula?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 13/05/2026 15:10

How could you force him? Impossible really. I’d maybe try food with a high water content. It’s probably just a blip in his routine.

No health visitor said better to use boiled tap water

Oh strange! I’d have assumed boiled bottled water was better abroad. Hopefully it’s just a change to his routine confusing him, especially if it’s a bit warmer or colder where you are

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 13/05/2026 15:43

You can water down his puree a bit, and offer him finger food like cucumber and watermelon sticks?

Raera · 13/05/2026 15:58

If you are using boiled tap water I wonder if it tastes different from the water at home?

Cherry85 · 13/05/2026 17:06

You aren't meant to use some bottled water due to sodium content.... I can try some with liw sodium though and see if it helps

Can you buy premixed formula

kscarpetta · 13/05/2026 17:12

28oz formula sounds a bit on the higher side for a 7 month old anyway so he may have been ready to drop a bottle anyway.

You could do a dreamfeed and feed him in his sleep?

ACR7 · 13/05/2026 22:46

could You coax more liquid with a little bit of watered down apple juice

Evian has a really low sodium content and we used to use this overseas with DS's formula/ bottles....

Agua de Luso is the only bottled water in Portugal that’s been approved for preparing baby formula (the only one that’s legally allowed to claim that,)

StopGo · 14/05/2026 14:08

The tap water has a different mineral content and may taste ‘funny’. Água de Luso with the yellow cap is a low salt water suitable for infant feeding.

Sorbet and Frozen yoghurt is the answer
