What could this patch in my toddler’s hair be?

Does anyone have a clue what this could be in my 3.5 year old’s hair? A week ago someone through sand in her hair but I’ve washed her hair thoroughly since. I guess the options are nits (but this doesn’t look like them?), dandruff, delayed cradle cap…? It is only on a specific section of her head.
Anything else?
it is entirely new from the past few days or so.
Thanks for your help

Sounds like nits. Photo?

Sorry, can see the photo now. Looks like nits.

Do the bits brush off or are they stuck to the hair? Could be dry scalp if they brush off?

MamaNell · 07/05/2026 08:19

That’s nits

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 07/05/2026 08:53

Don't forget to treat everyone in the family at the same time.

Yes looks like head lice eggs on shafts of hair.

TibbyMoves · 07/05/2026 12:32

Thank you all. First time dealing with lice 🫣

I would try a lice/nit comb and see if you find live lice. With that amount of 'stuff' in her hair you'd expect loads of lice. If you dont find any lice then it could be something else

whattheysay · 07/05/2026 12:46

If it is nits it’s certainly a lot! You would notice lice with this amount of eggs and also it wouldn’t be only on one patch of the head. Nits don’t brush away they are hard to pull off so if falls out easily it most likely is not. I would still get a nit comb and comb it through and see what comes out

Rubyupbeat · 07/05/2026 13:12

Looks like cradle cap?

VividDeer · 07/05/2026 13:13

If they brush off hair easily its not nits. They cling on

VividDeer · 07/05/2026 13:14

My daughter gets cradle cap that looks like this. Maybe the sand made her itch

dementedpixie · 07/05/2026 15:37

P.s. nits are egg cases and lice are the insects
Try a nit comb with conditioner

oberuber · 07/05/2026 19:06

That amount of nits without crawling lice?
Easy to test. If you have to use your nails to detach them, it is nits. If it comes off easily, it is something else.

Clearinguptheclutter · 07/05/2026 19:11

Doubt it’s nits unless you can see them crawling round
any chance the sand just didn’t wash out?

MabelAnderson · 07/05/2026 19:20

It’s either fine sand that hasn’t been rinsed out well enough (although it should have fallen out by now) or those are the egg cases of headlice, eg nits.
As pps have said, coat her hair in conditioner and then comb through with a nit comb. Wipe onto tissue, if these are lice then you will see tiny dark lice on the tissue. If they are newly hatched they are very small and it can be easier to be sure of what they are if you use a magnifier, or take a photo and zoom in.

Aroundthemalepole · 07/05/2026 19:33

If it’s nit then that’s a serious amount and surely it would be all over and not just in one part of the scalp?

scrivette · 07/05/2026 20:41

I don’t think they are nits if just in one place - with that amount of nits there would be lots of lice and I am sure you would have noticed them when looking through.

mindutopia · 07/05/2026 22:06

Nitty gritty comb and conditioner and comb it all through. He would be absolutely infested if those are nuts so you will see them if you wipe the conditioner off on a white towel. No black bugs then not nits.
