Does anyone's child suffer with extreme anxiety?. I have a 9 year old with seperation anxiety and verging on EBSA. Tonight he's been vomiting as soon as school is mentioned. Any ideas on how to help? Please

My daughter is 9 and is also very anxious about school tomorrow. She has just been crying in bed for 30 mins. She'll go tomorrow and will be fine probably. She's had a lovely long weekend if doing whatever she wants with no pressure. Ive just sent her downstairs to watch football with her dad. I dont really have any suggestions but might help to hear you're not alone!

Poor little lad. Sadly this is pretty common so you’re not alone. Have you spoken to the school SENCO? Can school refer to CAMHS? My DC was like this from Early Years onwards and by the end of primary was diagnosed as autistic/ADHD - not saying that’s the case with your DS but worth reading up on neurodivergence to see if he fits that sort of profile. In my DC’s case the school put in adjustments (classroom breaks, soft starts, ELSA sessions) which has helped take the edge off the school anxiety. It’s an ongoing battle but a lot better than it was!

We also found this website a really helpful resource: notfineinschool.co.uk

Thank you. I went to the GP who told me to get a Autism diagnosis, which is done as anxiety now falls under Autism. The Head said to me recently that she was worried he'd be a school refuser soon, which I can see happening. I think I shall try to arrange a meeting with school.

Sorry, I should of added CAHMS aren't taking any children in my area. We seem unable to get any help anywhere and I'm at my wits end.

Definitely push for as much support as school can offer (be prepared to be persistent) and ask them to signpost to other agencies that might be able to help. Local SEND parents’ forums are also a great source of help IME (search for them on Facebook etc). Your local authority website should also have a “local offer” which lists various support services.

Thank you. Had anyone found an approach that works?. My worry is a reduced timetable for example may just be delaying the problem but equally I don't know what school can do to help
