Training pants - Anyone tried them??!

Have posted on this before.

Despairing a bit at DS1 (nearly three, so I know it's not dramatically late) who is really really happy in nappies, wet, dirty, whatever. Doesn't report needing to go, or having gone. Have had a couple of tries at pants (cold turkey style) but not successful as soesn't seem aware of any urge to go.

He does, however, manage on his one day per week with the childminder who does 2-hourly toilet runs. DS comes home in the same nappy he left the house in on those days, but refuses to show any interest/inclination for me. V frustrating as I am therefore confused over whether it's an ability or a control issue (specific to home, as clearly he manages with CM)

I'm starting to worry about him being the only kid in pre-school in september whois still in nappies and stinking like an old drain...!

Just wondering if anyone's used those lightly padded training pants? Do they work? Might they be a good go-between or might they just confuse the whole process...? Have avoided using pull-up disposables for this reason.

Ideally I want to be able to just let him decide to let him know when he's ready, but right now I'm not convinced we'll ever reach that point...!

Any ideas, tips, startegies, etc...I'd be v grateful.

Cloth training pants only hold the wee for as long as you need to whip em off quick. They pretty much just stop soggy socks, but nothing for more than a couple of mins most

Dunno i fthat helps you either way!!!

I have found that with ds3, the Bright Bots training pants have occasionally meant that we only have to change the pants, not the trousers as well, but you do have to get to them quickly. tbh, I do think it sounds as if you might just be making work for yourself, though. The only good thing about the pants is that they might make him more aware that he is wet? Do you use cloth or disposable nappies?

misspollysdolly · 20/06/2008 21:16

Disposable (Nature) nappies. Used cloth nappies between 1-2 years in the hope he would become aware of wetness/being dirty but he was never all that bothered and never weemed to beome more aware of having weed or pooed. Around two years he would just flood through the cloth nappies so I switched back to disposables.

Funnily enough I have been looking at Bright Bots online tonight - hence posting this really - as I wonder whether he would get on OK wearing them to playgroup. I'm not sure he's going get anymore aware of his bodily function without going straight into pants (or training pants) but I just can't get my head round how not to give up too quickly and go back to nappies.

Just can't work out whether to just (attempt to) take control of the situation myself, ditch the nappies and stick to it come rain shine, or poo. Or whether I hang on til he 'decides' he's ready. Personally I'm not sure waiting for my 3 year to make this decision all by himself is very fair or reliable. Any thoughts...?

They won't help much for nursery.

Can i point you towards bumfluff for bright bots?

Flamesparrow · 20/06/2008 21:20

in potty training hell here, so no advice here

swampster · 20/06/2008 21:20

Some (outdoor) nappy-free time in the summer could help him get to grips with the reality of bodily functions - potty nearby, long T-shirt...

I brought some wonderful training pants from boots. The cost about 6 pounds a pair but will always hold a wee and keep the clothes dry. They are white with a terry towelling outside nd look just like normal pants to a general observer (mum at playschool).Good luck.

chipmonkey · 20/06/2008 22:25

Those Boots ones are actually a rip-off of the Bright Bots, I think. But the Bright Bots are better and funkier!
mpd, would you consider putting him in cloth nappies for a little while? My ds3 is far more aware of when he wees or poos than ds1 and ds2 were and he's been in cloth since birth while they were in disposables. I don't think disposables feel wet enough for them to get the picture.

chipmonkey · 20/06/2008 22:26

AND the Bright Bots are cheaper! Had to go to Bumfluff to make sure!

misspollysdolly · 21/06/2008 20:01

Might go back to cloth for a while, though it's a bit of a faff for playgroup, etc. Wondering whether/hoping that training pants might have the same effect as going back to cloth nappies, so have bought some mothercare ones today - not sure I like them though as they seem very crinkly (though of course I don't want DS to LIKE them really so this may not be a terrible thing I guess!), so I might also buy a couple of bright bots online too... Going to try tomorrow - fingers crossed!
