Would you leave your baby outside?

So my twin boys do not sleep unless they’re in the car or pram being moved. The minute it stops, they’re awake. This morning I have walked for over an hour to the shops and back, and they fell asleep for the last 15 minutes until I walked inside the house. I have ordered a Rockit from vinted. I’m hoping it will arrive soon and I am praying it will work because otherwise I have no clue what to do. The lack of sleep is making everyone miserable, including the boys themselves.

I have a large window at the front of my house and we live in a quiet cul de sac. Very few people walk by and are almost always neighbours. I can see outside from my couch and I can easily open the window and listen out for them if they cry. I also have a next door neighbour I trust who has a similarly placed window. And a ring doorbell.

Would it be insane of me to leave my boys outside in their pram with the Rockit on? Just to give us all a moment of rest? I wouldn’t dream of moving an inch if they were outside so I would have my eyes on them all the time.
Please be gentle, from a burnt out mum!

I totally would - I could wheel my buggy round to the back door fairly easily, and we often just left the baby sleeping out there with the window open. I would also leave them asleep in the car with the windows open - street parking only but you can have a cup of tea and read the paper in the front garden right next to the car.

I used to just sit on a bench in a park and sit there with a book for an hour. I'm not sure I would want to leave my baby outside, but we didn't have the kind of house set up that you have.

Good luck with the Rockit, I found my DD wasn't convinced by it and would still wake up! I didn't mind walking her in the buggy around a park though, I'd just stroll really slowly and listen to a podcast.

I would sort the gate regardless as soon enough you’ll want easy access in and out of the garden and that doesn’t sound great.

I am in a culdesac and everyone can see everything - I can hear when a car is turning into our bit even. I am an anxious mum so I wouldn’t go start hoovering or anything, but I’d definitely leave them just outside the door with the door open and the ring camera on, go grab a tea and a book and sit somewhere in eyesight.

DH made a very good point that if I left them at the front door with it open I wouldn’t even be that far away, maybe around 3 metres. They’d be more in my eye line than if they were by the window. I think I will start doing that.
Thank you for all the comments making me feel like I’m not a completely negligent mum for even thinking about it!

That's because he doesn't want to fix the gate!

If you put the children in a pram that's safe for sleeping in and put them in the back garden in the shade behind a locked tall gate, you can maybe take a nap yourself?

bigfishlittlefishtupperwarebox · 01/05/2026 13:33

I would absolutely do that - but also sort the gate and leave it open when you go out. So much easier and you would feel better knowing they're in your garden once you've closed the gate. You could easily add a yale type lock if need be

You can see them - it's fine.

mindutopia · 01/05/2026 15:24

It’s fine. I did it all the time. Mine literally had planned garden naps, where we went for a walk and then I parked them in the back garden outside the big window where I was sitting and they slept.

Mine also slept in the car regularly in cooler months. If we came back from somewhere, I’d leave them in the car, parked in the drive where I could see them. We live on a farm down a private lane. Absolutely no one is going to come down here trying to steal my baby! I went and got them as soon as they woke up.

NuffSaidSam · 01/05/2026 15:32

It's absolutely fine. I hope it works for you!

PeatandDieselfan · 01/05/2026 18:42

I did that with all of mine, in all weathers. Rain cover on if necessary.

ShetlandishMum · 01/05/2026 18:51

We did. In the garden with the monitor but we are Scandinavians. In all kind of weather. Our neighbours weren't impressed.

BrummieTourist · 01/05/2026 19:11

If you're confident about your neighbourhood, definitely! We often do this and leave the front door open so I can hear him. The chances of anyone stealing a baby, even in a bad neighbourhood, are miniscule. A bigger risk might be dogs and cars, but if they're on a drive or in a garden I'm sure it will be fine. If someone tries to steal the pram, you have a built in alarm system ;)
