Toddler tooth decay?

Bookmarksandtrumpets · 26/04/2026 14:49

My husband noticed these white marks on the corners of my toddler's two front teeth. Ringing the dentist in the morning but in the meantime so concerned it could be decay. Any advice would be very much appreciated 🙏

Difficult to tell from this photo.
Does your child have drinks from a bottle , do they drink non dairy milk eg soya from a bottle?
If it is decay ,in this position , it is typically “bottle caries” ie decay from drinking sugary drinks like juice , oat milks , smoothies etc in a bottle.

Thank you for your reply. He only drinks from an open cup but he does have apple juice and milk, usually with a meal

Does he have pouches, even the no added sugar ones? Those are supposed to be bad for tooth decay

He does have these yogurts. They don't contain sugar so I thought they were good. Do you think it is tooth decay?

I was in despair when DS needed a filling when he was quite young. I always made sure his teeth were cleaned twice a day, not too much sugar etc.. But the dentist told me, just by looking at his teeth, they are sort of mottled, that there had been a problem when they were developing in the womb. He said it could have been that I had a bad cold or some other illness at the wrong time. So it's worth speaking with your dentist.

Those yoghurts do contain sugar OP. 7.9g per pouch. A toddler should have no more sugar than 15g daily. It -your photos-looks like early enamel demineralisation.
need to confine all sugars to 3 mealtimes only going forward .

Bookmarksandtrumpets · 26/04/2026 17:12

I meant added refined sugar but you're right. He has a lot of fruit too. Will keep that to mealtimes only going forward

Thank you so much. I'm ringing the dentist first thing tomorrow!

Toddler tooth decay is off the charts these days! It's surprising really because there's so much more awareness of the the dangers of sugar now. I think it's partly because kids seem to graze constantly all day rather than sticking to meals, and partly because of the rise in convenience foods as mums are working full time hours in a way they weren't so much 20 or 30 years back.

Can you remember if you had to take antibiotics while you were pregnant at all?

They don’t have added sugar but they do have sugar from the fruit , around a spoon and a half per pouch, which will decay teeth just as easily. Even “natural” sugars cause decay eg fruit juices, pulps , honey , agave syrup etc

it doesn’t matter if the apple juice , yoghurt , and anything else sugary is at meal times, it’s what is eaten or drunk inbetween meals that causes a problem. Particularly if it is sipped or sucked on as every sip or bite attacks the teeth for an hour afterwards.

its impossible to tell from these photos if it is decay , but if it is it will be from something eaten or drunk inbetween meals or just before bedtime , even if teeth are brushed afterwards.

This is a clearer picture. Thanks all for your help so far 🙏

To be truly diagnostic we would need to see the “back” of the teeth , but this certainly looks as if there is bottle decay on several of the teeth.
keep all sugary foods and drinks to meal times only and stop the pouches .

Also are you using a fluoride containing toothpaste?

Similar experience here. DC have had problems with their teeth, especially the molars. The dentist said it was due to something happening when the tooth buds were developing in the womb.

In response to your photo though OP, they are different in appearance to my DC’s (hopefully a good thing!).

APatternGrammar · 26/04/2026 18:18

Our dentist said anything at all in a pouch is horrible for the teeth. It shouldn’t be allowed to promote them as some kind of healthy option.

We are. I feel absolutely devastated about this as we are so careful with cleaning his teeth his teeth and he eats a healthy diet packed with veggies. Thank you for your advice. Do you know if it's reversible?

I have three children and the one who was the most cooperative with tooth cleaning and eating a healthy diet was the one having to have a filling aged 4 ! She as an adult is the only one who has had so many fillings! Unfortunately she inherited her father’s rubbish teeth!
I personally cannot see anything wrong with your toddler teeth but am not a dentist.

It’s not reversible if it’s caused a hole but changing frequency of sugar intake will stop it getting worse.

Do a diet sheet for your dentist with the times and every sip or bite of what your son eats and drinks during the day, for three days.

There are so many “healthy” foods and drinks like yoghurts, raisins, fruit juice etc which are as bad for teeth as sweets and pop and getting your dentists out now will get be you a good idea as to how to stop this getting worse.
