Children sharing a room

Hi everyone,

please may I ask advice for my theoretical idea..

we live in a 2 bed semi which we love in a lovely village with space for a playroom and nice sized garden.

we would love to have children in the future - the plan if we are lucky enough would be 2 children. Now we would then plan to move so they could have their own rooms eventually I guess before the oldest is 10.

but we are planning to renovate our house now (so want an idea of how long we are going to stay) and so would love your thoughts are of having young children sharing a room?

does it work if one is say 3 and another is only 1 with sleeping schedules etc?

obviously goes without saying I know so many children will always share with no issues at all but we can financially afford to move to a larger house so would do so if it would benefit our family significantly.

thank you ☺️

My kids have shared a room for 2 years. Currently 3 and 5. Bed time starts at around 7 with a story. 5 year old always falls asleep first. Nothing wakes them. Not burglar alarms, fire alarms, Slayer. Nothing.

It might work, but it might not. As the midwives say, 'Every baby's different'.

I found it didn't work for my DDs to share a room. There are 3 years between them. When they shared a room, they woke each other in the mornings unintentionally but once one was awake, the other woke and then they were done sleeping.
We moved each DD out of our room as she was fully weaned ca. 6 mos. into DD1's room but not long afterwards, we moved DD2 into her own room.
In her own room, DD2 (the better sleeper) slept well and later/longer whereas DD1 was always a light sleeper/early bird. She could play in her room quietly whilst the rest of us had a little more shut-eye.

I have a friend with 4DC and most of them sleep in the same room now, even as teens!!

Worked perfectly for me - Eldest was in my and ex's room until he was about 2.5 (slow migration from co-sleeping to own bed, to own room - coming into us in the morning).

Then when DS2 was born (when he was 3 and a couple of months) he co-slept with us until he was about 1, when he went in with his brother (they actually even shared a bed at first).

DS1 didn't feel abandoned, DS2 went from sharing with us, to sharing with his brother so he didn't feel lonely - DS1 liked his sleep, so it trained DS2 in how to behave at bedtime so easily.

Heartily recommend. When we moved to a bigger house, they still shared a room to sleep, and had a playroom with console/bits in. It wasn't until youngest was about 10 and eldest started secondary school that they decided they wanted separate rooms.

Oh I loved those early years when mine shared a room, story time was the best part of the evening bedtimes. They all got on so well and we could cuddle up if we wanted (lucky maybe). We moved and they got their own rooms and the bond between them was never as strong but they do prefer their own rooms as teenagers. Early years sharing worked well for us

My 4 shared until they were 13, 11, 9 & 7. It was mostly fine, because there were other areas they could use to play, do homework etc so the only time they had to be all in there at once was when they were sleeping.
When they all got their own rooms they really appreciated it (and still do, a year on) and it felt special because they could all remember what it was like before.

I've got 3 ds (aged 5, 8 and 9) and a 4 bed house so they could all have their own rooms.

They shared when tiny and now do so by choice. The eldest thought he wanted his own room for a while but tried it and quickly changed his mind.

OneTimeThingToday · 25/04/2026 20:07

Mine shared from when they were 2&4 until 6&7 (nearly 8). Technically DD2 was shaflring from a year old... but came into our room every night! By 8yo, DD1 needed peace and quiet away from her lit more loud snd energetic sibling.

There are lits of clever ideas for splitting bedrooms if necessary.

I had three DDs in one room for many years. It worked perfectly.

I put them all to bed at the same time.

Mcdhotchoc · 25/04/2026 21:02

I had 2.5 years between eldest. They shared until they were 6 and 8.
