DD (20mths) poos in bath almost every day - suggestions anyone?

For the past few weeks DD seems to have pooed in the bath more often than not, IYSWIM. It has got to the point that DS(5) understandably doesn't want to have a bath with her.

I have managed for a couple of days by having really quick baths (in, hair wash, out) but DH was in charge last night and she did it again - it doesn't seem to be related to when she last had a poo (I had changed her dirty nappy about 30mins before bath last night) and it is never a huge amount of poo so I can only guess it is some sort of reflex reaction.

Has anyone else had this and if so how did you break the cycle. DD loves splashing in the bath and hates showers so I really would like to somehow get back to being able to have relaxed baths..

Swim nappies?

stealthsquiggle · 20/06/2008 12:07

interesting idea and one I hadn't thought of - anyone tried it?

No suggestions but my two were the same, just a phase she has now grown out of. In fact it was quite funny, like russian roulette!

Stealth - have you tried bathing her at a different time of day? Just an idea but worth a try?

If you are going to use a swim nappy I would advise you to use a washable one, or you will end up spending a fortune on nappies!

Or could you maybe sit her in an empty bath and use a cup or something to poor warm water on her? ie the idea of a shower but without actually using the shower?

Oh god, DD2 used to do this ALL THE TIME. (DD1 did it occasionally.) DP reckoned it was the warm water just making her relax.

I am afraid I am no help on this as DP was clearly right - she quite often gets out of the bath for a poo still, now she is five and a proficient loo-user.

Trouble is, she's 20mths old. She needs a bath after supper as she is pretty much coated in supper - bath before supper would be entirely pointless! The only alternative would be to do it first thing in the morning before nursery and we are so not morning people

Nice to know we're not the only ones. I think I will persist with my speed bath approach for a little while and see if that will get her out of the habit - hopefully by then we will have finished (finally) the other bathroom and will have a proper viable shower option and I can "sell" that to her a bit more....otherwise it may have to be a swim nappy [sigh]

What about putting her on the toilet with a toilet seat, whilst you run the bath ? If she poos in the bath put it in the toilet and tell her that is where it belongs in the toilet.

She should catch on pretty fast at 20 months old.

I agree - I'd put her in the bath for 2 mins, then sit her on the loo. You'll potty train her in no time!

We had this - it was just a phase that stopped of its own accord. not much help I know! She did potty train really early tho.
