Just preparing to toilet train my 22mo DD. All advice is to take a potty everywhere you go until she is used to the big toilet.

Please can i have some examples of this....Do i arrive at someones house with potty in hand and plonk it in the kitchen? Do i whip it out from under the buggy in the middle of a shopping centre, or supermarket?

I don't believe it's worthwhile to keep changing into nappies when it suits me, i think cold turkey is the way i want to go.

It's just that i have never even seen anyone coming armed with potty to my mother and toddler group, never mind seen one produced when out and about.

And any idea how long this phase may last? A week? 6 months?

I did this for DS1. For DS2, I trained later, and didn't bother, he could perch on a big toilet ok, with help.

My MIL told me she did this. I have to say I was a bit dubious about it.

Yip, just take the potty with you and get it out wherever it's suitable. I had a portable potty which folded and was much easier to carry around not so stable, but still very handy. If you're in the supermarket then just take the potty to the toilets. I have seen alot of mums with pottys and for me it was the only successfull way as wearing a nappy is like going one step forward two steps back. There were times when I didn't use it like when we were travelling on a plane in which case I would put a nappy on. One other tip a waterproof cover for your carseat is also very handy just incase of any accidents- can't allways stop in time! Can't say how long it will take they are all different - be patient and sometimes they are just not ready for the change in which case I would leave it and try again in a month or so. Goodluck!

I carried potties around like it was an obsession - but in hindsight I think it was more for my piece of mind rather than for any real need. DS1 used the toilet if we were somewhere where there was a toilet rather than whipping the potty out. Actually tho, we did use it once at a Discovery Park Place. It was only last year and I can't really remember [tired] but I think the phase lasted only a week or so. HTH.

I never used a potty when out and about. DD went to the toilet before we left and we she either didnt pee before we got home again or we were somewhere she could use a big toilet.

Thanks all for your comments. She's doing amazingly well.

Big girl pant buying was great fun and she was so pleased with them she hauled them out of the trolly at the supermarket check out and showed them off to the very young camp guy at the till. He was a bit unsure how to react, and eventually said that he'd love some pants like that

5 wees in toilet and one wee accident so far to-day. And since we started last week just trying out the potty, she has done all her poo's in either the potty or the toilet.

I'm very proud and have just put the receipt for the big girl pants into her memory box.

Fingers crossed for continued success, she's only 22months.

Thanks again all.

I never did. Had a fold up seat for toilets (Tomme Tippe) which got some use with ds but dd went straight onto toilet when out.

belgo · 21/06/2008 12:24

Never took a potty with me anywhere. They were fine using public toilets, despite both being under two when potty trained and rather small.

posieflump · 21/06/2008 12:26

I think that's why you're suposed to stay home for the first week or as much as possible, to avoid the whole potty in the street scenario

AitchNunsnet · 21/06/2008 12:31

sounds great. dd's doiing it too but the poo side of things is taking longer.

we're not taking a potty, though, dd LOVES doing a pee on the grass in the park, it's her favourite thing. i figure it's summer, what the hell?
