My two DS have learning difficulties and it’s taken a long time. Tbh we found bribery with chocolate buttons and tons of praise worked best. Taking them every hour and before car journeys.

Not using a potty and using a toilet seat with an insert and a foot stool.

DS was late to train due to his autism. He finally "got it" when using the toilet. With hindsight it made sense- he never saw me or DH using a potty!

We have been training a child with additional needs at school. We started by changing in the toilet with staff sat on loo a changing child standing up (child preferred this). This got them used to being in with the toilet. Adult pretended to use the loo and flushed after just to get child used to it.
We have visuals and talked though each step.
Then we had child sit on toilet clothed. Then removed nappy and sit. This is where we are at now. It has taken a year.
But we've gone from screaming changes using objects of reference to us saying 'toilet' and them walking in unaided.
They still can't communicate a dirty nappy so are a long way off but recognising small steps on a journey.
