Accidentally gave my 8 month old over concentrated formula

I got up at 3am to feed my 8 month old, made his bottle, he drank it all and went back to sleep until 6:30am.

i have the little tub for his formula which has three compartments for the formula and you turn the lid to get to each one (If that makes sense). The lid must have been let right in the middle of two compartments so in the middle of the night I ended up pouring 2 compartments out in one bottle.

Hes on 7oz bottles so had 14 scoops of formula to 210ml water.

I feel like the worst mum and am so worried, this has never happened before 😢

has anyone experienced similar? Will he be ok? Do I need to call the doctor?

Hes fine in himself and woke up naturally babbling away.

He will be absolutely fine, don't worry.

Ineffable23 · 18/04/2026 06:50

I really think this will be fine as a one off. What are you worried might happen as a result?

PersephoneParlormaid · 18/04/2026 06:52

He will be fine. The worst that can happen, if it was a frequent thing, is that he’d get constipated.

OP, your anxiety is out of control which is very very common when you’ve a little baby. Take a few minutes to really think about this. What harm do you think you could have done here? What do you think formula is made of? How much of it do you think they’d need in one go to overload beyond what a human body can take? Why would companies put such a dangerous substance in the hands of sleep deprived mothers if it was possible to do harm with even an accidental triple dose?

When new mum anxiety is in control people put all their thinking on ‘the rules’ and what the baby book and instructions say. And stop thinking practically. Total tunnel vision. Maybe if you can take that onboard it might help the next spiral.

you’ve done nothing bad at all. You’re doing great.

Thanks everyone. I googled it and it said it was dangerous because of the sodium / salt levels or something. It mentioned calling 111 but I felt stupid even considering it as he seems fine.

@Yoheresthestory thank you so much! I feel like I have become very anxious since having him, I used to be such a relaxed person but now I worry about all sorts.

I felt awful this morning when I realised what I had done, but I’m glad I noticed this morning and not last night or I would have been up all night watching like a hawk!

Salt levels makes sense. I think if he was really really little or something that that could apply, but I don't think it will be a risk at his age.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/04/2026 07:00

it Would have been really thick in constancy - didn’t he struggle to drink it ?

as a one off I think it will be fine - he’s not a newborn and assume eating solids and drinking water from a sippy cup so try and get lots of water in him

maybe get single tubs for night to stop happening again

areandare · 18/04/2026 07:05

@Blondeshavemorefun nope he chugged the whole thing down easily! He’s a real foodie so think he’s used to the different tastes and textures.

It definitely won’t be happening again! It’s the first time it’s happened in 8 months, we used to use single tubs but the triple in one is much easier - as long as you check its on one compartment before pouring 😢

Yes they are bigger Assume only had one feed at night as 8mths so maybe going forward to stop happening again you can only have one portion left in it ?
