9 month old has skipped usual afternoon nap, do I put her down for a later nap or do I wait until bedtime?

My 9 month old usually naps around 2pm in the afternoon (she only has 2 naps a day) but today she has completely skipped her afternoon nap, I put her down at 2 and she just would not go down. It’s now 4pm and I just don’t know if I should still put her down for a nap, or if I should wait until 7:30pm for her bed time. I am worried if I let her nap late, she then won’t go to bed until around 10pm tonight, but if I keep her up and put her down at her usual bed time, I am also worried that she will think it’s her “second nap” and will then wake up at around 10pm thinking she’s just had her afternoon nap.

Help please, what do I do?! Thank you x

20 catnap, up 5.30 at the latest. Is what I did with mine around that age!

IeatPotNoodles · 11/04/2026 16:25

Being bedtime forward a little bit and go again tomorrow x

Biosblbay · 11/04/2026 17:00

@smooshraspberry changed her nappy, gave her a bottle, put her down 20 minutes ago to give her a cat nap as you said as she is still wide awake 😩 do you think keeping her up now is the safest choice? X

Put her to bed at 6.30 today.

Otterbabiesholdhandstosleep · 11/04/2026 17:08

I wouldn’t worry about getting it wrong. You’re not likely to have that much control about how this plays out. It’s not your fault. Babies just do this some days. She’ll fall asleep from exhaustion soon enough and then may well be awake later on in the evening. How is your day set up? Can you have a rest when she inevitably falls asleep at an inconvenient time? Or do have other kids and or other responsibilities early this evening?

Otterbabiesholdhandstosleep · 11/04/2026 17:09

And take a picture if she falls asleep somewhere ridiculous like on the kitchen/living room floor.

disturbia · 11/04/2026 17:14

Yes put her to bed at 7 instead of 7:30 and see how she goes

Youyoume · 11/04/2026 17:27

Just see how the afternoon goes, maybe drag out teatime and bathtime, or put her to bed a bit early if she seems exhausted.

Definitely don’t waste any energy panicking! Babies are just small people. Maybe she doesn’t fancy a second nap today. You haven’t spoilt anything or caused any issues.

Biosblbay · 11/04/2026 18:10

@marcyhermit just changed her again, given her a 8oz bottle and going to put her down between 6:30 and 7 🤞 I have a feeling she might be regressing as she is so close to crawling!!

@Otterbabiesholdhandstosleepday set up she naps in her own room, curtains shut and white noise on to drain out other noise, but I do have a 3 year old who’s bedroom is next to hers, but this normally doesn’t bother her. But I don’t get a chance to nap at all due to the 3 year old. I am lucky she sleeps through the night most nights, but I have a feeling tonight won’t go as planned, and the last 3 nights she has woke up at midnight/ early hours so I’ve not had much sleep/ lots of broken sleep so I am exhausted. My husband isn’t home tonight either and I am just desperate to get a good night sleep so I am slightly panicking about how tonight will go but I get babies are so unpredictable! My first born was a dream and he slept like clockwork! I do think my baby might be regressing though, she is so close to crawling!

I would have gone out in the pram hours ago! Mine never napped in their cot, wasnt worth the effort.

Peonies12 · 11/04/2026 18:18

Ps you are incredibly Lucky she sleeps through the night so young, please appreciate that! Mine was a terrible napper, the idea of panicking over 1 missed nap is wild to me 😂

I’m quite jealous actually. I have one a similar age who’s never slept more than 4-5 hours in a row. It does mean that I don’t have any anxiety at all about naps since my sleep being broken is a given.

I put mine down in the cot when I want them to wake up. It usually works within 5 minutes.

@Peonies12@Otterbabiesholdhandstosleep Now I feel awful for my post 🙈 I generally thought babies slept through the night quite young going by google, it says 3-6 months for bottle fed babies and longer for breast fed (mine is bottle fed) but I suppose what does Google know!
I’ll just go with the flow. She is getting tired now though, but if she wakes up I won’t stress, it is what it is! As someone mentioned earlier I’m not doing anything wrong which is what I was worrying about and babies will sleep when they sleep I guess no matter the time of day or night and will wake as and when they please 🙃

All the parents with rubbish sleepers stop answering the question honestly after the hundredth piece of unhelpful advice so google’s average is probably based on half of us lying. I do hope you get a full night’s sleep as usual but yeah, it’s definitely not your fault if it all goes to shit by midnight.

Otterbabiesholdhandstosleep · 11/04/2026 18:34

Also ´sleeping through the night’ is often defined as 6 hours of continuous night time sleep or something similar so midnight to 6am would count.

Carouseloflife · 11/04/2026 18:56

The clocks going forward may have effected her sleep pattern, just put her to be a little earlier.

My DS was having a good long sleep from two months old. I was bloody lucky with him and he still sleeps well at 21 months old, and still has a decent nap in the afternoon. I've always put him to bed quite late because that's how my body clock works.
