Started potty training today on the spur of the moment and DS has nursery this afternoon - what shall I do??

DS is 2.8 years. He has been reluctant to stop wearing his nappy and I havent pushed it, just been sitting him on the toilet before and after bath when he is nappyless anyway.
Recently he has done a couple of wees on the toilet and we had great excitement.
This morning on the spur of the moment I suggested we have no nappy today and he surprisingly agreed!
So far we have had 4 wees on the potty/toilet and no accidents at all! He is naked and I am asking him to sit on the potty very often.
A couple of the wees he did a tiny dribble on the floor and then stopped and looked at me so I hopped him on the potty where he did the rest.

He is doing so well I want to continue full steam ahead now.
My problm is that he goes to nursery Thurs afternoons. If he doesnt go I will lose my money plus I have some chores that I need to do really and cant do with him around.

At nursery its 4 child to 2 staff so they wont be able to wtch him closely enough to go without a nappy and its too early to take him out wothout one,

What shall I do? Send him with a pull up on and ask them to ask him very often to st on the potty there? Will that set him back?
If it will set him back and the real best thing to do is to keep him at home then I will, but I'd rather not iyswim as it will make things hard for me!

I am able to be at home with him all day tomorrow so could start again then?

Send in pants, if you have them, not a pull-up which will confuse him; explain your success, and they should be more than capable at that staffing ratio. Remember to send extra pants as they can't really have bare bottoms at nursery, explain how often they need to put him on the potty based on your estimation. It's only an afternoon, and so what if he has a few misses? This is only day 1 of his training.

Really?

He has been naked all day so no pants yet. I have got some though.

I think I might phone up first and check with them.

Its scary going out without a nappy!!

Ok phoned them and they said pants too, so pants it is!

2point4kids are you a first time potty trainer? Need any more tips?

2point4kids · 19/06/2008 15:35

Yes first time, can you guess by how clueless I am? lol

Tips would be fab. I'm struggling a little bit with the fact that I have a 4 month old baby too and my DS1 (who is potty training) is very active and doesnt like sitting still for long!

We have no plans at all tomorrow so am planning on staying in all day to concentrate on the potty training and my DH is home all weekend so he can help with the baby!

Any tips gratefully received

Not clueless at all, just wondered if you had trained a girl first and thought it might be different training a boy. O.K. these are born of experience:

Put pampers bed mats on sofa and chair seats and cover with a throw or fleece blanket, saves your upholstery.

When going out, put DS in shorts with no pants under, he will feel that there is nothing there to absorb a flood. Sometimes pants and shorts can make them forget they're not wearing nappy.

Or, get some swim shorts (the sort with elasticated waist and a pants-like insert sewn in) These look nice and can be pulled down fast, also can be rinsed through by hand if wet and line dried very quickly.

Make sure the carseat and pushchair have protection, a plastic bag or bin liner with a folded towel on top will do if you don't have the tailor-made liners (Buppy pads or similar)

Have a travel potty everywhere you go. It is always available, and newly trained boys are better off sitting down to begin with, until they know for sure whether they need to wee or poo! Teaching to stand to wee is best done after they've reliably trained. Some people (and DC'S) prefer a proper potty. You can line one with a disp. nappy, or a plastic bag with something absorbent i.e. a few sheets of folded kitchen roll.

Always take lots of spare clothes everywhere you go, and never ignore urgent potty requests. Make sure DH understands this, they sometime say "I'll just finish this first...." and then it's too late. When they need the potty, it means in the next 5 seconds. It is easier in the garden in warm weather, as no puddles to mop up.

Can't think of anything else, your DS is doing really well.
Good luck!

Some really good tips, thank you!

DS did really well at nursery, only one accident and then no more accidents all the way till bed time.

Thanks girlywhirly for advice...ive also just started potty training and youve made me think.....especially like the nappy in the potty advice would never have thought of it!!

girlywhirly · 20/06/2008 08:43

2point4, that is brilliant. He is so obviously trying his best.
I forgot to mention, when you're training, make sure all their clothes have elasticated waists! No fiddly fastenings or dungarees, and no bodysuit vests. You need to be able to pull them down quick. Also easier for DC'S to manage their own clothes eventually, when they take themselves to the loo. You will need to do bottom wiping until he can reach to do his own.

Resrict pull-ups to bedtime, naps and car journeys whenyou know he'll fall asleep.

I never used the potty with nappy in myself, but have seen it done. You could buy cheap value nappies for this. Some DC'S find it easier as a transitional stage when they will wee in potty, but only poo in a nappy. I had one of the original potettes for DS 16 yrs ago!!! It didn't get much use as he was at day nursery full time, and was really good about being held on loos. But it was useful in the early stages, consider a situation where you've made it to the Ladies, but every cubicle is full and there's a queue! Again, people often create their own liners for potette folding potties from large nappy sacks and absorbent material, kitchen roll, value sanitary pads etc, as the dedicated liners can be expensive.

Thanks!

We got off to a bad start today when he really did not want to wear pants or sit on the potty and insisted on nappy!
I managed to persuade him to try the pants and then he weed in them straight away!

Doing better now as he is bare bottomed again and I managed to get himon the potty with the promise of a bag of hula hoops lol. He did a big wee on there so very pleased.

We made a sticker chart togethetr this morning while baby was napping and he will get chocolate buttons at end of day if 3 stickers on chart!

Hi 2point4. Just wanted to show some solidarity. Am at pretty much the same stage with DS1 (2.3) - we started about 3 weeks ago as it was warm so he could walk around with a bare bum (and my Mum was here to help out!) and lo and behold he got it straight away, wees and poos no problem. However when the time came to put pants on, he felt like he had a nappy on and just weed away willy nilly (ha ha couldn't resist). This is pretty much where we are at now. When he's been to pre-school 2 mornings a week he has gone in pants and twice come back dry and once he was onto his 4th set of clothes but they put them on the potty every 15 mins. My problem is that I am a coward and shudder at the idea of doing Sainsbury's and leaving a trail of wee behind us but i must be confusing him by puuting it on and taking it off all the time. I know he's reasonably little but do you think that I mean to get on with it and pull the plug on the nappies apart from bedtime?
Thanks for advice everybody

He probably is a bit confused with the on and off of pull ups/nappies. If your worried re a trail of pee when you go out take an old towel out with you to mop up any accidents.

If confusing pants with nappies have you tried just putting on a pair of tracksuit bottoms?
