DS has grown out of his nappies but not quite ready to potty train, where do I go from here?

Ds has just turned 2 but is a big strapping lad and has all but outgrown his current nappies. He has had tots bots bamboozles size 2 since birth, but now they are decidedly slim fitting on him and leak badly. If I put a booster pad in them then they just don't do up!

Still being fairly new to this reusable nappy lark having had one lot since birth and resisted the temptation to buy lots of different ones I'm at a loss as to what I should be doing now. Ideally I want to keep him in reusables until he is potty trained but don't have a massive amount to buy new nappies with that may not get that much use iyswim. I haven't started potty training him yet as we have had a lot of upheaval moving house, new CM, etc... so want him to be settled before I start probably another 4 months or so.

So you wonderful nappy addicts please help me with the next step!

I would just get some terry nappies, little ewe are the best, I think I got mine from Twinkle on the web, about £2.50 each. The little ewe ones are so absorbent just as good if not better than a tots for absorbency. Not the thin mothercare ones they are crap. They are not so bulky on a larger child, and a 2yo should be able to keep still while putting them on.
I do a really simple non-bulky boys fold and you can hardly tell he has a nappy on its just so not bulky. And at 2 he won't need poo-proof nappies like a newborn.
I've had amillion different types of nappies and sometimes wish I had just stuck with flat terries as they are darned cheap, not that bulky, dry sooo quickly and then have a million and one uses round the house when the child is out of nappies!

DS1 is nearly 3 and has been in his size 3 tots bots nappies for about a year. He has now outgrown his Motherease onesize nappies that he uses for nursery so I have been looking out for some more 2nd hand sandy's and tots size 3 for him to wear to increase our nappy stash. Potty training looks to be a way off for him yet....

I've never used terries but it sounds like good advice if you aren't planning on using them for much longer.

I had 5 fuzzi bunz pocket nappies. It meant I had to wash them every night, but they dry very quickly. I already had plenty of terry nappies which I used to stuff them.

You can use them as pull-ups which can be handy when you start potty training. Also we used them as night nappies until ds was dry at night.

I had large for my ds who was well above average height, and he was still on the second tightest poppers when he toilet trained.

Also they looked really funky last summer when ds was running round in just a t-shirt and nappy. We had some bright, funky colours and I would co-ordinate t-shirts with the nappies.

Klio, just bear in mind that 2 is very young, especially for boys. He may be in nappies longer than you think.

Washersaurus · 19/06/2008 16:19

Klio, have you tried boosting between the nappy and the wrap, rather than popping the booster inside the nappy, that is how we put together night nappies.

Washersaurus · 19/06/2008 16:21

Sorry, I also wanted to add that DS1 is a very heavy wetter and a nappy will rarely last him longer than 2.5hrs before leaking (tots bots cotton ones last longer)

Thanks for all the advice, really helpful.

I know what you're saying chipmonkey about length of time for potty training boys, etc... but I suppose I am just trying to be positive and telling myself it'll all be ok

Tutu the fuzzi bunz sound like a possibility especially as I could then use them as pull-ups. Not sure about terries, simply from the pov that ds is like greased lightning and can't get him to lie still, not even if I bribe him! However used to use them when he was little and loved them, something therapeutic about folding terries I found!

I really liked the fuzzi's. Like I said as long as you have enough stuffing you can get away with relatively few of the actual pockets because they dry so fast. So the actual outlay doesn't have to be that much.

I agree though that he could still be in nappies for a fair while so they would be a worthwhile investment.
