I always make it with boiling water at work. It’s hospital policy.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/04/2026 14:54

No idea about a rapid cool. I’ve not got the hang of them!

When I used to do my stint in our hospital milk kitchen all milks were made up with boiled water that had been allowed to cool for 30 minutes.

I invested in a kettle that boils to 70/80/90/100° as I have to make up neocate daily for my child. Boiling water can kill the nutrients in the powder.

Apparently it’s already sterile (nutramigen) so has to be in cooled water?

Yeah I thought this but then apparently nutramigen is already sterile so should be put in cooled water?

oh wow. My daughter had both nutramigen and neocate 16 years ago and I was not told this! She’s perfectly fine btw (I’m not minimising the correct preparation of formula).

Booooooooom · 05/04/2026 15:06

Yes mine too. 26 years ago I was making up nutramigen with boiled water and she’s lived to tell the tale :)

HolidayHappy123 · 05/04/2026 15:30

Ha! I never knew that. I always made it with boiled water for DD who is currently revising for her GCSEs!

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 05/04/2026 15:33

Yes!

I used rapid cool 🫶 and had a cmpa baby

Shake the water...add the powder... one more shake... all good

I wish we had a milk kitchen. Had one at the hospital I trained at and I really miss it! I thought once the powder is opened it’s no longer sterile. The same as all other powders. Hence having to use boiling water.

The instructions on nutramigen specifically say to use cooled water. It’s because they add probiotics to help with CMPA that would be killed at high temperatures.
