here?

There aren't very many in the area, tbh. The children's House in N1 is a new pre-prep, and there's a montessori school somewhere. Most people who want serious private go to highgate or Hampstead for it. Most others make sure they're in catchment for the desirable state primary schools (of which there are several).

thank you ladies! yes i heard there aren't many in the area but didn't realise how bad!

how would i find out what are desirable state primary schools in certain areas?

we may have to move! ds is 2 so we still have some time!!

thanks againx

have a look at ofstead reports, there are historically good schools in certain areas, catchment areas change every year. north london is a nightmare, from the sublime to the ridiculous. where do you live?

sunshine185 · 19/06/2008 13:57

thanks hifi! i am starting to get that gist that north london is a mare! we're north of highbury... happy to go private but even then choice is limited.

will do an ofsted search!

you need to look at the schools nearest to you, they are the ones you will be offered.otherwise you will have to move!

State primary schools here (N16) are fine.

Save your cash and spend it on their extra-curricular education (ie lots of ice creams and trips to the zoo ).

Grafton is good, William Tyndale, Canonbury, Gillespie, Betty Layward, William Patten etc. Drayton Park okay too i believe. I also know people with kids at Duncombe. It's really not that bad, there's quite a lot of choice unless you're hellbent on one particular school and don't live close enough. St John's Highbury is meant to be difficult to get into.

There are private schools springing up -- The Children's House or Gower school, or whatever they're all called.

If you can go private - don't hesitate!Forget state primaries in N16. Check out preps in Hampstead.

Firawla · 17/07/2010 23:07

we have good state schools in holloway area, grafton and yerbury (well they are said to be good i dont have dc in school yet - too young) the montessori one is gower i think its somewhere round stroud green road kind of area.
aparently montem school is good i've heard from people whos dc go there, also pakeman (although those two schools both not level 1 on ofstead, depends if you are that bothered)
i dont think the state schools here are too bad at all tbh, for primary at least

mamatomany · 19/07/2010 18:52

Don't rely on ofsted reports, their idea of outstanding and mine are poles apart. My daughter has gone up 2 levels in Maths in one year after we left her outstanding primary and moved her to prep.

TooTiredtoGoogle · 22/09/2010 19:10

bump
I'm looking for private primary too - it would be a temporary measure in case DD doesn't get in to any of our preferred state schools and we have to go on waiting lists.

Does anyone have any first hand experience of The Gower and/or The Childrens House?

allanjames · 22/06/2011 08:24

I know that Kingsbury Junior School is a good school, my sister has her two kids going to that school. Also you can check out Gower House School in North London.
