Where do you change your baby ...

...if you're visiting someone else's house?

I used to change mine in the bathroom. A visitor today changed hers, without asking, in the living room in front of other visitors and I wasn't sure it was the right thing to do.

I did this all the time, would change everywhere when mine was a baby baby. Would usually ask the host where they preferred, but no one ever said to kneel on the floor of the bathroom. Occasionally they’d say to use the guest bed if they didn’t have a changing mat themselves…

User543211 · 29/03/2026 21:50

Depends on the visitors but generally I think is ok. Anything to make life easier!
Also poo always in a different room.

youalright · 29/03/2026 21:53

I don't see the problem i would of done the same

I usually just lay the pram flat and change baby on there if I’ve come on foot. That’s usually in someone’s hallway out of the way. If not, I’ll ask where I can change my baby. If I needed to change the toddler, then I’d always do that in the bathroom. He stinks!

JustGiveMeReason · 29/03/2026 22:14

I'd say "just going to change him" and gather things to get up and head off to the bathroom, and they then had the option to say "You're fine, do it here" if they don't mind, but I always thought it best to head for the bathroom as option 1.

rommymummy · 29/03/2026 23:41

I’m like your guest. I bring a mat and do it on the floor, I’d ask if it’s ok first. I wouldn’t want to be on the toilet floor and I’ve never been asked to, I’d rather use the boot of my car.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 29/03/2026 23:50

Wherever. I’m fine with guests using the living room floor with a mat if that’s what they want. I wouldn’t send them to the bathroom. And I changed mine on living room floors as well.

Legomania · 30/03/2026 17:45

Once weaning, I went to another room if it was a poo. The smell lingers!

My cousin once tried to change his toddler son's pooey nappy in the middle of the living room 😨

StripedTee · 30/03/2026 17:50

In the bathroom. It's gross to do it in someone else's living room without their go ahead.

Krobus · 31/03/2026 13:52

If they had a baby I used their changing mat wherever it was. If not I used a folding mat on the bathroom floor. If it didn't look clean (never happened) I probably would've used the hallway but not the room everyone was in drinking tea. I used cloth so needed water to wet the wipes.

mathanxiety · 01/04/2026 02:18

I'd go to the bathroom.

Nobody needed to see my babies' bare bums or smell the contents of their nappies in their sitting rooms.

I always changed my babies in their bedroom on a mat, if out I would use the bathroom never thought to do different.

i have visitors with young children now, my grandchildren are changed in the bathroom or the spare room and that’s what I tell friends todo if they ask. It’s a mixed thing really some ask, others just disappear to the bathroom others just get on with it in the living room, so long as it’s a tiny baby I’m not that bothered, a dirty nappy or toddler I really don’t think living room is right, even in your own home ! I mean you need to wash your hands ? That’s one thing I did with my children too, as soon as they were old enough to understand- about 6 months I think, I would change the nappy then wash my hands and get them to wash theirs. It just teaches from the word go to wash hands after the toilet

DaisyChain505 · 01/04/2026 02:33

I wouldn’t think twice about changing them in the living room. If I’m visiting someone’s home that means they’re friend or family and they wouldn’t care.

FunnyOrca · 01/04/2026 02:47

Bathroom. I need to wash my hands!

frenchnoodle · 01/04/2026 03:40

The Bathroom usually.

mammat72 · 01/04/2026 03:54

always changed daughter and grandaughter on the floor in the lounge on portable changing mat at all my families houses.

Topseyt123 · 01/04/2026 04:01

I normally used the bathroom floor.

NorthernDancer · 01/04/2026 09:34

Thanks everyone

I've never really thought about it before but I think it depends on the age of the child too, very young I'd probably be a bit less concerned about privacy than at 3 or 4 years old.

I have a mat in our living room for my baby so my friend changed her toddler on it yesterday. I guess she was thinking it was ok to just do it where we do it. But a little baby is different from a nearly 3yo who has done a poo and I wished she had gone to the bathroom!

She did at least bag up the soiled nappy and take it away with her though.

I once had a friend change her 2 year olds nappy (very smelly) and she went to put it in my kitchen bin. I asked her if she could please take it home with her and she got really pissed off. Problem is I lived in a flat with no outside bin. We had to put our black bags out on the kerb every week and my bins had just been done the day before. I didn’t really want a smelly nappy in my house for a week! She actually didn’t really talk to me for weeks after as she said I was being ridiculous. I honestly don’t think I was.
