Long walks with a 5 year old

I love going for lingerie walks with the dog, however my 5 year old not so much. She will walk for a little while before complaining she's tired. We have tried scooters / bikes but she she will still get tired. Any tips on how I can get round this and actually go for a nice long walk without the moaning?

It's a bit chilly for lingerie walks 🤣

Maybe she is just embarrassed that you’re nearly naked 😂

My daughter used to hate dog walks too so I remember this well! I found distraction was the best way of dealing with it. We used to play games like ‘the minister’s cat’, eye spy, ‘I went to market’. Is 5 years old enough to play those sort of games yet? My children are teenagers now so I can’t remember exactly when they could play those games.

Other things they loved was taking a camera out with them to take photos, collecting thing to make pictures with when we got home. Telling stories, doing geocaching, having a picnic, meeting friends for the walk.

Take a sling and carry her when she gets tired

No comment on the attire but what worked with my kids was going somewhere fun, like the woods or along a canal path. They have always been quite happy to walk but it was a lot more fun when the terrain was varied and there was wildlife to look at.

I think perseverance is important to build their stamina but there are things you can do to help. Pick a more interesting walk (our DD prefers a small mountain/ summit to a flat walk, or a long boardwalk, walk with a beach etc). Perhaps not possible with a daily dog walk but if try this occasionally it might help.
Take motivational snacks.
Games along the way - hide and seek, would you rather, etc.
Scavenger hunt (you can buy cards for this if you need to).
Find things that can be used for crafting (eg nice pebbles to paint).
Make sure shoes are comfortable and they are warm enough.
Walk to something...a park, a cafe for lunch etc.
Take a friend, which in my experience triples their stamina!

My yo and i did a long distance walk think 70 plus miles but over 6 days (non consecutive) last summer. Longest day was 12 miles...we planned cafe/picnic stops (though at the end he wanted to just keep going) had a camera, on rougher days had a chocolate coin every mile, we went on public transport to start when we could as that meant he had to figure a plan/keep tickets safe, he counted the way markers, and the one who got to it first claimed it (he ran off as soon as he saw a post that might be one!), definitely ger a map.. We had a walking guide and an OS map and that was very useful so he could carry it and follow the plan. lingering maybe isn't the thing.. Purpose and momentum definitely works. Oh and the longest he had gone in one go was 5 miles before that... And we did it regularly like at least once a week to do the whole route... And we made a scrap book. It was really special and lovely bonding. Make it an adventure. It was more comfy when he had proper hiking shoes and decent hiking socks and he carried a rucksack as well as me (not much in it but it has got him used to it) all kids are different though.. Ymmv...
