Affordable pram options for a very heavy almost two year old

Hi, I’m looking for recommendations or solutions in relation to prams for larger children, my daughter is just shy of two but she is currently weighing 22kg and has outgrown 4 prams now. We are currently awaiting hormone/genetic testing for this issue, however I am at a loss for what pram to go for next that is affordable and not disability equipment. Currently the only ones I can find are £750+ and are mostly all special needs equipment which my daughter does not require. Any advice greatly appreciated

Phil and teds are large and even fit my 5 year old when he gets tired.

I had a cheap Hauck Runner 2 for the forest, it still fits my 6yo

SausageOfAmbiguity · 27/03/2026 14:42

The all terrain type buggies seem to be generally bigger and have higher weight limits. Hauck Runner mentioned by pp goes up to 25kg, as do the Mountain Buggy ones (Urban Jungle or Terrain). I imagine this is an "absolutely safe" weight, so you could probably stretch it a bit!
But second hand for goodness sake, then you'll spend £200 rather than £750, and sell it on for the same money next year.

Have looked into these thanks but max weight is only 20 for the Phil & ted and the issue I have is although weight limit maybe 25 she’s already 22 then plus whatever changing bag/stuff goes underneath obviously adds to the weight, I’m really struggling pushing her in current pram & she’s also 3ft1 and quite wide shoulder wise so a lot that have deeper bucket seats she can’t actually fit into! We got given a larger silver cross & it genuinely looked like she was sat in a children’s pram🥲

I’d go for a second hand Mountain Buggy. We went through various different pushchairs with my lot and this is the one we ended up with. It was really sturdy and large enough that occasionally I had an older one in it instead of the toddler.

SausageOfAmbiguity · 27/03/2026 16:44

The weight limit is generally for the seat, not for seat and basket combined. Check, obviously!

Mountain buggy urban jungle has a sizeable seat in terms of height and width. Seat weight limit is 25kg, but I'm sure it won't fail at exactly 25kg! They wouldn't push it that close to it's break limit. Urban jungle is a good crossover buggy - it's all terrain but not so huge you can't get it into shops etc. If you think you can handle a proper running buggy (much less manoeuvrable) then there will be more options.

Another vote for mountain buggy terrain. Fits my (small) 5yo and good up to 25kg

User1367349 · 27/03/2026 17:42

Just to say we got ours second hand for £100

Mt563 · 27/03/2026 17:43

Do you use the pram often? Could you get a ride on scooter or similar then use a 25kg limit pushchair infrequently to preserve it?

How long do you think you'll need to be using a pram? Is it likely to be longer than usual?

nomeslice · 27/03/2026 20:05

I had a silver cross pop folding pushchair. it says 22kg weight limit but I was absolutely pushing both my 3 year old and 6 year old around an airshow last summer and with a backpack slung over the handles.. it never missed a beat. I sold it recently but it was great.

Mountain buggy are definitely the best for big kids ime.

A fancy trike like the Puggle Easy twist or Kinderkraft Aveo possibly? They’re about £60-£90 new and designed to be used up to the kids about 5yo

A wagon could be an option depending on what you would be using it for but they’re not great if you’re on and off public transport or nipping into shops with it a lot.

Special needs buggies are for kids that have physically outgrown ordinary buggies before they’ve outgrown the need for them, whatever the reason. If that’s the case for your daughter, then that’s what she needs.

i definitely second what others have said about buying second hand as well, whatever option you go for

My 6year old has occasionally gone on my vista (just as a joke - it’s her little sisters now!). Mine is on its 5th child and is totally bombproof, you could get a second hand one (especially if it’s an older model) quite cheaply.

Lochroy · 27/03/2026 21:56

The first generation Silver Cross Pop (without the bumper bar) has a 25kg weight limit whereas the newer version has the lower limit.

That said, a travel system pram or an out n about or mountain buggy would be a lot easier to push.

RandomMess · 27/03/2026 22:05

If you can get one a Bob Revolution, they were imported by Britain’s for a few years. They have a higher standard weight testing and the seat is huge. My 7 year old fit in it easily and was tall.

pottylolly · 27/03/2026 22:07

I wouldn’t bother. Just get a trike you can push with space for your bag.

Phoebe96 · 27/03/2026 22:52

We have tried trikes for her age range etc and she just doesn’t actually fit in th harnesses etc, same with a silver cross th seat itself is too narrow for her shoulders. Will look into all of the options posted thank you all so much

The 25kg weight limit is fairly cautious ime. I think it's probably the max they test to but can often withstand higher. Like a pp, I've ended up pushing a 3yo on the lap of a 7yo on a regular buggy and it's been fine. The worst that could happen is the frame breaks and you're stranded, but it's not safety critical like a car seat weight limit. We've had a Phil & Teds and Baby Jogger and I'd be confident with a heavy dc in either of those. Both bought second hand very cheaply.
