Any help with 3yo cough relief

Dc is 3 and has been ill all week with a terrible cough on off fever sore throat and vomiting. Went to the gp today who said its tonsils causing the issue and gave medicine which we started as soon as we got home. Meanwhile I'm preparing for another night of zero sleep as dc literally cannot stop coughing. I've put an extra pillow in the bed to try and prop him up, fresh air from the window for a bit before bed, calpol, calpol diffuser, water to try and encourage him to sip when his throat hurts but its just absolutely constant. Is there anything else I can do to give this child some relief? He's not congested and gp said lungs are clear and it's just his throat that's causing the problem. He sounds absolutely miserable and it's hard to listen to. He's exhausted and barely eaten or slept all week (still drinking thankfully) and I'm just worried he's getting more run down.

Have you tried piriton? I don't kniw if it would help in this case/with this illness, but I have found it to be very useful at quelling overnight coughs

What medicine had been given. How many times a day and how many doses has he had?

Cantstopcoughing1 · 26/03/2026 21:56

We've only got it today so he's just had one dose before bed of Phenoxymethylpenicillin. I'm really hoping it will help but obviously we still need to get through tonight and he'll get a full course tomorrow

Would he drink some honey and hot water? It might sooth his throat a bit x

Maybe I could try this, I've struggled to get water into him to be honest just little sips constantly throughout the day but anytime he has a big drink he throws it up so I'm not convinced he'd keep it down bless him.

@Cantstopcoughing1 it's difficult when they are this poorly. What about some ice lollies?? They will be nice and cold and get some fluids in to him. Same with frozen smoothie perhaps?? Good luck and I hope you have a better night x

I'm not a medic @Cantstopcoughing1 but I think that's four doses in 24 hours. In my experience with small children, throats and ears, they pick up after the fourth dose. It may be helpful if you can give him a dose six hours after the first, even if it means waking him.

I had some ice cream in the fridge so I did try him with some of that earlier just to try and get something into him plus thought the cool might help soothe his throat and he refused it which is so unlike him he's usually an absolute bin and would be delighted with ice cream.

Might make some frozen lollies tomorrow to see if that's any more palatable for him.

Yes that's the recommended dosage. Gosh I hope so, I just feel so sorry for him. He's normally all go all the time and he's just so wiped out and miserable.
