Son having challenges at school

Hi all, please can I ask for advice? My son is 5 years old and in year one and we are having problems with schooling. He has never really enjoyed school and would prefer to be at home playing with his toys! I also think he doesn’t find it enjoyable. I find that we are struggling in three areas.

Firstly, behaviourally, he has been playing up at school shouting he hates school and being disruptive. The second is academically he is working towards reading, writing and numbers - which means he is at the bottom of all categories (just within, securely within, operating above).

And lastly I think the kids are being mean, he said a couple knocked his hearing aid out on purpose and he only really has two that he plays with regularly. He said one hit him in the tummy yesterday which I am going to speak to the school about immediately. I really want him to thrive and be happy. Any suggestions? I know I should work with the school but I also wonder whether changing schools might be another option - appreciate it’s a bold move but there is one his best friend goes to which I wonder if he may be happier in.

Sorry to hear that he’s having some problems. The leap from YR to Y1 can be difficult to manage for any child.
It sounds like there is some teasing/ bullying going on. I’d see how the school deal with the situation before considering a move. It certainly needs addressing.
Have you spoken to the SENCO about his support needs? Is there a Specialist Teacher for hearing impairment visiting and advising?
Does he have an EHCP? Sorry for all the questions just trying to get an idea of what is in place for him.
You could see if school has a buddy system where older pupils keep an eye on younger pupils at break and lunch times.
