Baby won’t take calpol

Hit me with all your tips on getting baby to take calpol!

I’ve tried spoons, syringe in the back of cheek, blew in his face, tried different flavours, medicine dummy etc. Nothing works. I’ve never had any issues like these with my first child!

Yes DS2 hated calpol - it seemed to be a flavour thing and so I bought basic infant paracetamol from a pharmacy in flavours like cherry 🍒 and he tolerated this better.

SchoolDilemma17 · 19/03/2026 18:19

My first child was like this and in the end we had to have two adults and a towel. It wasn’t pretty but had to be done. One holds child, child’s arms are wrapped in towel, the other syringes in back of mouth and then the person holding child closes child’s mouth. We had years of drama 🤯😟 child 2 is the opposite and loves Calpol!

And the European solution also works! Suppositories. A UK pharmacy should have them too.

We used to buy the 6+ and just work out the dose as it was much smaller volume and easier to get in especially when it was 1.25 ml and we could use the tiny thin syringes

ponyinmypocket · 19/03/2026 18:55

Suppositories or just put it in their milk!

Start with a half dose in their milk, so that if it fails you know you can give at least another half via another method without worrying how much they have had.

Thank you. I haven’t tried cherry yet. Did find some orange flavoured paracetamol which was even worse than strawberry. Fingers crossed!

Yes this is what I’ve been thinking. Sadly, I tend to be by myself and feel like I’m wrestling an octopus! I don’t have enough hands! I did buy some suppositories but haven’t yet worked up the courage to use them…

out of interest, how did you ensure your child didn’t spit it out? This is what seems to happen with me. I aim for the back of the cheek and blow his face to trigger a swallow but instead he just spits it right back out…

I hadn’t actually thought about this. That’s clever!

Syringe in back corner of cheek but just a tiny bit at a time so they can’t spit it out

Thank you. I’ll give this a go. I’m breastfeeding so would need to express some. I’m worried he won’t take it as I’ve tried to give him his vitamins like this and it was a big fat no!

I had my kids in Europe so we used suppositories. Once you get past the initial concept it's so much better - no syringe drama and no uncertainty about how much they've actually taken.

Yes I’ve done this before too. Works out cheaper too

This is what I’ve been trying but he just seems to spit it straight back out. What am I doing wrong?!

I’ve bought some and will use them if I need to. Practically though, how do you actually do this? I can’t seem to find any information on how far they need to go in for example…sorry that’s very tmi!

I also used suppositories with my daughter who wouldn't take Calpol.

Paaseitjes · 19/03/2026 19:37

Suppositories! Way way easier and you're certain it all goes in. They're expensive in the uk compared Europe, but worth it. Less stressful for everyone

wishfulthinking25 · 19/03/2026 19:39

My 1st is the same but will (reluctantly) take nurofen

The gp was the one who suggested it to us and made sure we could work out the dose correctly,it helped so much especially with a reflux baby with less liquid going in !

We tried these but after the first 2 ds realised he could just squeeze them back out 😂😂😂

CurlewKate · 19/03/2026 19:51

Mine hated it too. I took the view that in most cases if they could fight that hard, they would survive without it…….

Shoot it really mostly at the side of the mouth but just towards the back. Hard to spit from the side of your mouth.

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 19/03/2026 19:52

Have you tried mixing with jam?

It should say on the leaflet. But just until it's gone in, then I hold their butt cheeks together for a couple of seconds so it doesn't pop back out. I don't like doing it but they don't really seem to mind, and it kicks in much faster than giving it orally.

marcyhermit · 19/03/2026 20:30

Do they actually need it?
