How invasive is bursary application?

Long story short — my husband owns a small apartment separate from our home, and he only told me today that he hasn’t been paying tax on the rental income.

I’m currently applying for a bursary for our son at a local private school, but he’s now saying I shouldn’t continue. He thinks the school might check financial details with HMRC, realise the property is being rented out, and that it could trigger a large tax bill.

Does anyone know if schools actually contact HMRC as part of the bursary process, or are they just verifying assets like property ownership?

I’m really annoyed and upset with him, as it feels like this could affect our son’s chance at a private education because of his mistake.

You are seriously more concerned about your child getting free private education???
im hoping this is a joke but if not you are pretty stupid posting on a public forum that has your details 🙄

I have a bursary for my child and we have to renew every year. It is massively invasive but they don’t go to HMRC. However they do see your tax returns and months worth of bank statements and will ask you about any discrepancies.

Are you not more worried that he wants you to stop the bursary because he intends to keep avoiding paying tax on the rental?

That means its not a mistake.

If hes worried it would "trigger a tax bill" it means he still is continuing to avoid filling one himself. And youre married, so its your problem too. And tax evasion can carry penalties of up to a 200% fine and 14 years in prison. So if i were you, Id be notifying HMRC now you have become aware
