Hi we have just moved into a new house which is rented bur it doesn't have a bath just a shower. My 4 year old hates the shower and I'm struggling to get him to go in.
Has anybody got any suggestions maybe a toddler bath or large baby bath if you can get them.

Pop up bathtub. You can get on Amazon

Perhaps one of the small cheap paddling pools ( i would go for push up sides not inflatable as easy to put up and fold away.) with baby bubble bath it would be fun and easy to keep him clean!

The largest stokke bath would be fine, they last a long time and are easy to store.

Small paddling pool to sit inside shower tray?

johnd2 · 15/03/2026 22:23

The big folding "baby" baths are perfect, we use one in the shower tray for our 6.5 year old with no issues, mainly to avoid wasting water, takes no time to fill.
We've used the actual bath about 3 times, it's just a waste of space!

Edit we have this one but I'm sure there are others

We were given one of those big stoke baths when we lived in a rental with just a shower. My children were one and three at the time and fitted in it together (through choice) it did the trick.

We actually use a very tall and wide plastic laundry basket. My toddler wants to stand all the time so it's safer than a bath! And the baby baths are too low.

Lots of good suggestions, but also keep working on getting them used to the shower. It'll be much easier that faffing with folding tubs in the long run. Start with just their toes and gradually more body parts until they can tolerate a full shower. Let them see you shower too and let them join in. Make it fun.

Baths are not normal in the country I live in, so we have always dealt with this. Honestly, the thing that made it easier was going swimming. Swimming pools = fun, swimming pools = showering, so showering became associated with a fun activity, and not a problem.

Also, at a certain age they were old enough to understand that shower = quicker, quicker = more time to play.

My son still loves a bath, and gets them at both his grandparents houses and hotels, which makes those trips a bit more special. Day to day its fine though now, and he is a pretty good showerer.

Also, try making showers fun, and introducing a bit of play. Depending how water proof your area is, give him the shower, let him shoot it around. My son alternates between treating it as a gun.. as a fire hose.. pretending he is washing windows etc. You can get a few sticky bath toys that he can play with stood up etc. It doesn't have to be: bath = play, shower = boring.

If you don't already, get a shower head that can do multiple settings... My son was fascinated when we had one with a "mist" function... and kept demanding to be "misted" - kept him happy and giggling for a good while.

Try having the shower head much lower so the water goes on their shoulders and below and not their head and face. This worked wonders with one of mine who hated the sensation of their head being under the shower. I also let them hold the head and direct it - carefully - where they wanted it so it became more fun (and often a lot messier).

We’ve also used one of the massive storage tubs (50 or 70 litre) as a makeshift bath. Emptied it with a jug until it was light enough to lift and empty.

I'd get a set of these pipes toys for the shower wall.

I wouldn't use a paddling pool or laundry basket. I'd be concerned about regular use of cheap plastic with hot water and what toxins the plastic might be emitting. The Stokke bath is designed for the purpose and they have made it free from BPA/Phthalates.
