What/how many toys do your DC have?

I always thought my DD had a normal amount of toys. We definitely don't spoil her continuously and a lot of what we buy comes from charity shops, with the exception of bdays and Xmas.
I had a friend over last week (she doesn't have children) and made comments about the amount of stuff and toys my 5 year old had, which made me feel uncomfortable. Based on what I have seen at playdates she definitely doesn't have more than other children we know.

Does this sound like a reasonable amount of toys for a 5 year old (obv just a generic list, cannot go into too much detail):

  • quite a lot of legos (some gifted, some big sets purchased for a very small price at charity shops)
  • a couple of playmobil sets
  • some Disney princess dolls
  • a kitchen (small and old, again second hand) and bits to play with it like plastic food, pots and pans etc
  • playdough set
  • 4 or 5 jigsaws (I admit she barely ever use these but likes to have them)
  • lots of soft toys (these have been accumulated over the years and it's possibly the type of toy she plays with the most so although we have 2 big baskets full of them, they are really well loved and used almost daily)
  • a few princess/fairy outfits
  • a pram + baby doll type of thing
  • a couple of musical instruments (toy ones)
  • some magnetic tiles
  • 3 polly pocket sets (gifted from relatives, I reckon she could do with less)
  • lots of cute stationery, colouring and painting things
  • lots and lots of books (never too many good quality books in my opinion)
  • a bike and a scooter
  • some beads to make jewelry

I am sure I missed a few bits like little figurines, mini ponies etc but these are roughly the main toys she owns. Are we raising a spoiled child or is my childless friend BU?

This sounds absolutely fine,OP. The point is, not what your friend thinks, but are YOU happy with what your DD has? It's not the amount, but has she got toys that entertain her, that's she's learning from, that she can be creative and imaginative with etc etc

I know one child who appears to have very little as she is into crafts and it's all stored away apart from what she is currently creating with. I visit another home where toys are strewn through every room but that child actually loves being outdoors as much as possible and I've only seen her play with one doll on a recent visit

Other people can easily make judgements during a short visit but only the parents/carers know what toys are suited to their child

Hope this helps

. . And I meant to say I totally agree with you about the books!

People without kids have literally no idea.

If she plays with everything on a regular basis then it's not too much. There's not much else to it.

I think constantly buying children new things is not good, but this doesn't sound like that.

Yes I also think they have no idea as if I didn't have DC I would probably be surprised too as I didn't really have that much growing up. I think toys were also more expensive 30 years ago and kids didn't have so many parties etc all the time either, at least not in my circle!

Before you have kids, you can't imagine the tsunami of shite that will enter your home!

I'm quite strict on what comes in, and it's still more than I thought! Unfortunately children will develop an emotional attachment to every plastic party bag toy and unless you are a monster they do indeed hang around.

Yoto cards have been the best thing ever, especially at birthdays and Christmas. People ask what they want and I always say yoto cards. It's saved so much space.
